Closer Watch

Athletics – Sean Doolittle got blown up on Monday, loading the bases before giving up a walk-off grand slam to the Tigers' Rajai Davis. That's two straight blown opportunities for the lefty closer, although even with all those hits and runs tacked onto his line, he still owns a 2.97 ERA and ridiculous 0.69 WHIP for the season. Nonetheless, Doolittle is far from established, so it's getting to be worth wondering whether Luke Gregerson or Dan Otero might get a shot to finish some games if there are more righties than lefties due up.

Cubs – Hector Rondon completed Jake Arrieta's gem with a relatively pain-free ninth inning Monday, working around a lonely single for his 10th save. A few recent rough outings have thrown some doubt into Rondon's job security, with the sparkling Neil Ramirez looming large, but this performance will give Rondon at least a little cushion.

Rays – Joel Peralta got the call in the ninth with Tampa up a run Monday, and he blew it, giving up a solo homer to Brian Roberts (gross). That's his second time giving up runs in three outings, and it certainly isn't going to go a long way toward winning Peralta the closer's role. For now, this is going to remain a merry-go-round between Peralta, Jake McGee and Grant Balfour.

Recommended Pickup
Mookie Betts, 2B/OF, BOS – In most competitive leagues, Betts has been snatched off the wire already, but he's widely available in shallower formats. If you haven't heard, Betts hit .345/.437/.520 with eight homers, 29 steals and a 51:33 BB:K (yeah, for real) between Double-A and Triple-A to force his way up to the majors. A second baseman throughout his career, Betts saw a good amount of reps in the outfield this year, as the Sox have that Dustin Pedroia guy occupying second, but they clearly want Betts' bat in the lineup. With his advanced plate discipline, great contact skills, killer speed and underrated pop, Betts is poised to make a major fantasy impact down the stretch. Make sure he doesn't go unowned in your leagues.

Other Recent Recommendations: Dayan Viciedo, Josh Harrison, Marcus Stroman, Mike Zunino
