Rest-of-Season Projections
Begins career in baseball ops
Cleveland recently added Otero to its baseball operations department as an advanced scout, signaling the end of his playing career, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Before spending the 2020 season on the Yankees' restricted list due to presumptive opt out, Otero spent parts of eight seasons in the majors with San Francisco, Oakland and Cleveland. Over 358 career relief appearances, Otero posted a 3.39 ERA across 403.2 innings. Since he turned 36 in February and likely would have had to begin the upcoming season in the minors if he signed with an organization, he's instead decided to transition into an off-field role within the sport.

Last season was a forgettable one for Otero. After producing an ERA below 3.00 in three of the previous four years, Otero saw his ERA jump to 5.22. This largely came as a result of struggles with home runs (career-worst 1.8 HR/9). Batters combined to hit .292 against him, with left-handed hitters teeing off to the tune of a .333 batting average. Some positives can be drawn from his campaign, as he struck out batters a bit more than he did in 2017 and walked just five batters all season. With that, his FIP was lower than his ERA, and his HR/FB sat well above his career mark. However, he has no clear path to saves and limited strikeout ability, so Otero simply isn't an appealing option heading into 2019.

ANALYSIS
Otero limped to a 4.85 ERA in 29.2 innings this year, striking out just 16 in that time. The righty, who turns 35 in February, could land a middle-relief job with another club before the next season starts.
