Closer Watch

Dodgers – Maybe no fantasy owner believes in Brandon League, but Don Mattingly sure does. League collected the save Monday and has an incredibly terrifying 9:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings to go with an ERA and WHIP that only a mother could love. The deeper stats say League's arguably been even worse than his numbers, and there certainly aren't many extreme pitch-to-contact closers like him. Meanwhile, Kenley Jansen is a stud closer waiting to happen and everyone knows it… except that he essentially never gets any save chances.

Diamondbacks – Heath Bell entered with the bases loaded, one out and a five-run lead in the ninth inning of Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader; because the tying run was on deck, it was an official save chance, and he "earned" the save by giving up two hits to score all his inherited baserunners, then locking it down. Bell's been far from untouchable, but he hasn't been blowing saves either. J.J. Putz is still a ways off; speculators should look in the direction of David Hernandez or Brad Ziegler in case Bell really falters.

Cubs -- More job security for Kevin Gregg, as Kyuji Fujikawa heads back to the DL. Not that Gregg's needed it; he's given up just a lone unearned run in 13.1 innings with a 13:5 K:BB and six unblemished saves. Unfortunately, the Cubs haven't won since May 18 and haven't had a save chance for Gregg since May 12 -- more than two weeks ago.

Recommended Pickup
Nick Franklin, 2B, SEA – The Mariners have called Franklin up, and that's actionable news in all but the shallowest fantasy formats, as he's been great for Triple-A Tacoma this year – a .324/.440/.472 line, especially impressive for the OBP. That's thanks to a truly spectacular 30:20 BB:K – marking an incredible improvement in his contact skills over the last couple years. With a little power and speed to go with that on-base ability, Franklin could be a savior for owners struggling in the middle infield. In many fantasy leagues, he's going to be eligible at shortstop as well as second, which only adds to his value.

Other Recent Recommendations: Joe Smith, Leonys Martin, Kevin Gausman, Bronson Arroyo, Rick Porcello
