Burnett had a nice season in a middle relief role for the Twins last season with a 3.52 ERA and 10 holds, but almost all of his peripheral stats suggest his success is not sustainable. Burnett had a poor strikeout rate (4.5 K/9) without a low walk rate (3.3 BB/9) or outstanding groundball rate (52 percent). Much of his success was likely due to a low BABIP (.279) and unsustainable home run rate (0.5 HR/9). With the mediocre strikeout rates he has had in his career along with a lack of outstanding velocity (92 mph average fastball), he could be set for a significant decline. Still, he will begin the spring with a setup role in the Minnesota bullpen.
Burnett was a mainstay of the Minnesota bullpen last season even though he's continued to be unproductive after a hot first month in the majors (a 6.61 ERA and 47:33 K:BB ratio in 69.1 innings since June 10, 2010). It's hard to see why the Twins have stuck with Burnett instead of more promising options in the minors given his mediocre strikeout rate and poor control. It's not as though he has outstanding velocity (92 mph average fastball) or a unique pitch. We're not sure what the Twins see in Burnett, but fantasy owners shouldn't be fooled. He'll compete for a middle relief role again this spring.
Burnett made the bullpen out of spring training last season, which was a surprise since he wasn't considered one of Minnesota's top prospects. He pitched well initially in a long relief role with a 2.30 ERA before June 15, but then struggled and was sent to Triple-A. He continued his struggles in the minors with a 5.49 ERA at Triple-A and a 10.80 ERA when back in the majors in September. While Burnett had good strikeout rates in the minors before last season, he didn't have outstanding control. He'll try to win a spot in the bullpen this spring, but it's hard to see much upside given his repertoire and minor league numbers.
