The Cubs reassigned Zagurski to their minor-league camp Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After a four-year hiatus, Zagurski resurfaced in the big leagues last season for the first time since 2013. He was lit up in two relief appearances for Milwaukee but fared better with the organization's Triple-A affiliate at Colorado Springs, logging a 3.20 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 45 innings. Zagurski will likely open 2019 with the Cubs' Triple-A affiliate in Iowa.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2008
Zagurski had a few short stints with the Phillies last season but spent the majority of his year at Triple-A Lehigh Valley where he racked up an impressive 71 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. Unfortunately, he also walked 27 over that same span, which is much too high of a walk rate. Zagurski will get a chance to compete for a bullpen spot this spring, but figures to enter camp behind fellow lefty Antonio Bastardo in the pecking order.
Zagurski missed all of the 2008 season after having right hamstring surgery and left elbow surgery. He returned to action last season and went 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA and a 53:23 K:BB ratio in 45.2 innings at Double-A Reading. Zagurski needs to cut back on the walks a bit, but his strong strikeout rate seems to indicate his stuff has returned post-surgery. The Phillies will likely give him a look as a reliever this spring, but he is a long shot to make the team out of camp.
Zagurski was erratic with Philadelphia in 2007, posting a 5.91 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 21.1 relief innings, and missed the 2008 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April. He’ll miss the beginning of 2009 as he continues to rehabilitate his elbow and will have to prove effective in the minors before the Phillies consider calling him back up to their roster. Even if he is able to make it back to the big leagues, it’s unlikely he’ll have much use from a fantasy standpoint.
Zagurski had season-ending hamstring surgery in August. He struggled with the Phillies this year, posting a 5.91 ERA in 25 relief appearances. He has potential, but he will have to prove healthy and effective to make the Phillies bullpen out of spring training.
