Ogando was signed just weeks before spring training in a classic low-risk / high-reward transaction. A former starter who delivered mid-90s heat had fallen on hard times in 2014 as a result of a strained elbow that reduced his velocity and effectiveness. The heater ticked back up to 95 mph and it stayed there pretty much all season for Ogando, who led the Boston bullpen with 65.1 innings pitched. The fastball velocity and the innings were the highlights for Ogando, who pitched well enough in the first half of the season, but an unsustainable BABIP (.229) eventually caught up with him. He was pounded in July and August when he gave up seven homers across 20 innings. He finished the year with a 3.99 ERA that was belied by his 5.32 FIP. The Red Sox cut ties with him, designating him off the 40-man, and Ogando opted for free agency. The good news is that the velocity came back and Atlanta chose to take a flier on him.
