Closer Watch

Houston - Following deals to send out former ninth-inning options Jose Veras and Wesley Wright, the Astros seem poised to cycle through closers in order to see if any darts stick, what with the future the ultimate end game for the organization. The most recent casualty realized his fate Wednesday, when Jorge De Leon was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City after just a pair of appearances in the final frame, both eventual losses. In his most extensive outing last Friday, he surrendered two runs on three hits and a walk, while striking out one in 1.1 innings, output that was ultimately deemed demotion-worthy. Since De Leon's last game Sunday, Houston has sent out Chia-Jen Lo on back-to-back days, with overall splendid results, at least for now. After capturing his first career save Tuesday, Lo has yet to allow a run with a 5:3 K:BB ratio across six outings (6.1 innings), which should allow him to serve as the team's fireman for the foreseeable future.

Recommended Pickup

Will Venable, OF, SD - Venable has found his way into the Padres' lineup most days in 2013, but with fellow outfielders Cameron Maybin (knee) and Kyle Blanks (Achilles) sidelined with no activation date in sight, the 30-year-old has rarely missed a start since the break. In 77 second-half at-bats, Venable has slashed a supreme .364/.410/.662 -- entering Wednesday's contest in Colorado -- which he has upheld in the month of August by securing three home runs, five RBI, seven runs scored, and four stolen bases. Continued starts in right and center field are to be expected until further notice for the dynamo that suddenly represents Venable.
