Closer Watch

Baltimore - Jim Johnson converted on a fifth straight save chance Thursday, breezing through a perfect frame against the Astros on just 10 pitches. The right-hander has recovered nicely since his rough stretch there in May, much to the chagrin of those who added Darren O'Day in hopes of Johnson losing his job as closer for the Orioles. Despite a 4.34 ERA on the year, Johnson's 20 saves have him one behind Mariano Rivera for the American League lead.

Detroit - In his first appearance since his disastrous four-run blown save against the Orioles last Friday, Jose Valverde threw a perfect ninth inning Thursday against the Rays for his seventh save of the season. It was a nice bounce-back performance, and considering the Tigers' lack of other end-game options, Valverde's job seems secure. Joaquin Benoit has been good in the set-up role, but he's now given up three runs in his last four appearances.

Recommended Pickup
Chris Johnson, 3B, ATL - Now that Juan Francisco is with Milwaukee, Johnson is left to handle the bulk of the duties at third base for Atlanta. Ramiro Pena will likely continue to steal occasional starts against right-handers, but Johnson's consistency at the plate should keep him in the lineup most days. He's an especially nice option when a lefty is on the mound for the opposition, as the 28-year-old Johnson is slashing .386/.429/.596 against southpaws so far this season. That's not to say he struggles against right-handers, as he's still batting above .300 against them for the year, but his numbers are significantly better against lefties. While his counting stats may not be extraordinary, more playing time for Johnson could help him become more than an one-category player.
