Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2010
McGuiness got a brief look with Texas when Mitch Moreland hit the DL on the heels of an MVP campaign in the AFL in 2012 and a decent start to the year at Triple-A Round Rock. He did little in his limited time with Texas, and his overall slash line at Round Rock (.246/.369/.423) doesn't promise much for the future. The trade for Prince Fielder blocked him at first base, and he was traded to Pittsburgh in the offseason. He'll compete for the first base job or a reserve spot this spring.
McGuiness, 22, is entering his first full-season of professional ball. He's got an advanced approach at the plate, showing good patience and seeing a lot of pitches in his at-bats. His swing is topspin heavy and doesn't generate a lot of loft, but he drives the ball well and the organization feels there's power that can be developed. Defensively, he can handle himself around the bag and digs balls out of the dirt well. Organizationally, the Red Sox already have first-basemen Lars Anderson and Anthony Rizzo ahead of him at the advanced levels, so McGuiness will have some time to develop his power game.
