Receives new opponent for UFC 272
Smith will fight L'udovit Klein at UFC 272 on March 5 after the withdrawal of Erick Gonzalez (undisclosed), Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez was forced to drop off the card, so Smith will have a week to prepare for his new opponent. Klein is coming off a disappointing performance in October, as he lost to Nate Landwehr via submission despite coming in as a heavy favorite. Smith has also struggled late with losses in two of his past three bouts.

Set to return to Octagon in March
Smith (orbital) will take on Erick Gonzalez in a lightweight bout at UFC 272 on March 5, Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith is looking to find his stride after dropping two of his last three bouts. He sits 3-2 overall with the UFC and suffered an orbital fracture in his loss to Jamie Mullarkey back in October. Gonzalez dropped his UFC debut a few months ago.

Suffers orbital fracture

Inconsistent ways continue
Smith lost to Jamie Mullarkey via TKO (punches) at 2:51 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It's a crushing defeat for Smith in a fight in which he entered as a moderate favorite (-155) and had a strong first frame. Smith was the better fighter in Round 1, finishing with a 25-23 edge in total strikes landed, but the roof caved in during the second frame. Smith got popped with a body shot and countless additional strikes before dropping to the ground and getting stopped. Smith began his UFC run with back-to-back knockout wins, but he has since dropped two of his last three, being knocked out in both. Smith is a one-dimensional power-puncher who is at his best in all-out brawls, so there are going to be some inconsistencies along the way.

Booked for October return
Smith (hand) will take on Jamie Mullarkey (wrist) in a lightweight matchup at UFC Fight Night on Oct. 2, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith received a six-month medical suspension in early February after he sustained right hand and wrist injuries in his win over Justin Jaynes via TKO (doctor's stoppage). The 27-year-old is now 3-1 in his first four UFC appearances, and he'll face Mullarkey, who is also coming off a medical suspension. Mullarkey defeated Khama Worthy via KO (punches) at UFC 260 in March for his first UFC win, but he's been sidelined with a right wrist injury since then. The fighters are even in height, but Smith has an edge in reach.
