Closer Watch

BOS - Alfredo Aceves blew his third save of the season Sunday, allowing two runs on a Sean Rodriguez home run to lose 4-3 to the Rays. Although Aceves has a 4.76 ERA, he's been solid for most of the season. After suffering his third blown save May 21st, he recorded nine consecutive saves and put up an ERA of 0.96 in 18.2 innings. He'll be fine going forward and should retain the job.

MIN - Matt Capps finally blew his first save of the season, giving up a two-run bomb to Miguel Cabrera to seal his squad's fate. Honestly, many were surprised (myself included) it took this long, but he's been able to avoid huge messes with pristine control (0.5 BB/9). Still, he only has nine strikeouts in 18 innings, and when you give up that much contact, home runs -- and blown saves along with them -- are inevitable.

Recommended Pickup

Tom Wilhelmsen, RP, SEA - Another day, another closer losing his job. This time it's Brandon League. The Mariners are going by a comittee officially, but consider this rule of thumb of closer committees: go with the best righty in the pen. This time, it's Wilhelmsen, who has 30 strikeouts in 24.1 innings and the best "closer stuff" on the staff. The Mariners will try to work League back into the role, but Wilhelmsen is the good short-term play.

Other Recent Recommendations: Steve Cishek, Justin Morneau, Alex Cobb, Tyler Clippard, Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
