Closer Watch

Baltimore – Jim Johnson had another meltdown Sunday in which the Blue Jays tagged him for four runs, and that makes four blown saves in his last five chances. The Orioles are yet to announce any change, but it is definitely time to be thinking about Darren O'Day and Brian Matusz.

Cleveland – Sadly, Chris Perez did not record a blown save Sunday. That is because he was removed with some sort of arm injury just in time for Joe Smith to give up a walk-off double to Jacoby Ellsbury. Perez had been steady until his last three outings in which he has allowed seven runs in 2.2 innings. If the Indians make a change now, it could be a committee led by Joe Smith, Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen.

Los Angeles Angels – Manager Mike Scioscia gave Ernesto Frieri another chance Sunday with a three run lead and Frieri held serve. He had been rocky of late, allowing runs in each of his last three outings.

Recommended Pickup
Joe Smith, P, CLE – Things are not looking good for Chris Perez, as documented above in closer news. It seems very possible the injury is serious and that means a change at closer for the Indians. Even if Perez tries to power through this, his last three outings are enough to force manager Terry Francona to make a change. Joe Smith is the longest tenured Indian in the bullpen and he has been outstanding this season. Vinnie Pestano had been the setup man the last two years, but he is struggling this season. That could pave the way for Smith to get save opportunities.

Other Recent Recommendations:Leonys Martin, Kevin Gausman, Bronson Arroyo, Rick Porcello, Will Venable, Jake Odorizzi
