Once thought to be the Indians' closer-in-waiting, Pestano was traded to the Angels in August. Though he struggled at the major league level with Cleveland, he excelled in the minors, securing a microscopic 1.78 ERA through 30.1 innings at Triple-A Columbus. That dominance followed Pestano to his new organization, as he allowed just three earned runs in 17.2 frames over time split between Triple-A Salt Lake and the big club. One concern about Pestano last year seemed to be the loss of velocity on his fastball, as the pitch averaged 89.9 miles per hour after being clocked at 91.2 the year before, but the 30-year-old appeared to get his strikeout prowess back nonetheless, tallying punchout rates over 29 percent at Columbus, Salt Lake, and with the Halos. Pestano signed a one-year deal with the Angels in November, and could be a candidate to stick in the bullpen out of spring training in 2015.
Pestano entered the season as a popular closer-in-waiting target, but struggled when given the chance to close when Chris Perez hit the disabled list. The Indians eventually sent him back to Triple-A Columbus in an effort to get him back on track, but he didn't fare much better upon his return. He was a very effective setup man in each of the previous two seasons prior to last year's nightmare so a rebound does not seem to be out of the question. Pestano has been passed up by Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw in the pecking order for saves, however, and the Indians signed John Axford to begin the season as the team's closer.
Pestano was not quite as dominant as the year before, but was still very effective (2.57 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 9.8 K/9) in a setup role for closer Chris Perez. He figures to inherit the closer role if the Indians decide to shop Perez, but the Indians' closer reversed some downward trends en route to a career-high 39 saves last year. Keep him in mind as a potential closer-in-waiting, even if the Indians enter the season with Perez as their ninth-inning option.
Pestano quietly emerged as Cleveland's top setup man to Chris Perez as the season wore on and would likely step into Perez's shoes in the event of an injury to the team's closer. He absolutely chewed up right-handed batters (.115/.218/.192 with 70 strikeouts in 147 plate appearances) and handled lefties well enough en route to a very fine season including a 12.19 K/9IP in 67 appearances out of the bullpen. Expect another fine season again and bump him up several notches in formats that count holds.
Pestano earned a September callup after a dominant season at Triple-A (46.1 IP, 35 hits, 59:14 K:BB). His three-quarters delivery and mid-90s velocity gets groundballs by the bushel, but he'll need to beat out some established arms to earn a spot in the Cleveland bullpen.
