Closer Watch
Washington - Rafael Soriano imploded Thursday against the Pirates, walking the first two batters he faced before giving up an RBI double to Jordy Mercer, and later, an RBI single to Russell Martin. He recorded just one out, and was later tacked with two more earned runs when Ian Krol allowed Mercer and Martin to come around to score. It won't go down as a blown save for Soriano, since the team was still up when he exited, but the right-hander was responsible for all four runs against Washington in the ninth. Though Soriano has now surrendered six runs in his last five appearances, and his strikeouts are down this month, there doesn't seem to be reason to panic just yet. The 33-year-old posted a 1.80 ERA with 18 saves from May 1 to July 14, but if he can't right the ship, manager Davey Johnson may starting giving some thought to returning Tyler Clippard, who's given up just one run in his last 21 appearances, to the closer's role.

Recommended Pickup
Brandon Beachy, P, ATL - The Braves have said all year that the starting rotation would work itself out, that they needn't worry about finding Beachy a spot in the rotation because something typically happens to make the decision for them. Sure enough, injuries to both Paul Maholm (wrist) and Tim Hudson (ankle) have created opportunities for the guys waiting in the wings. Rookie Alex Wood was up Thursday to take Maholm's turn, and Beachy appears primed to take Hudson's spot starting Monday against Colorado, though an official announcement hasn't been made. Beachy has looked good since resuming his rehab with Triple-A Gwinnett, most recently tossing six innings of two-run ball on Wednesday. It's hard to expect the 26-year-old to post the kind of numbers he did last season (2.00 ERA, 0.96 WHIP) coming off Tommy John surgery, but it's reasonable to think he can step in and make an impact for the Braves, and fantasy owners, right away.
