Dream11 Fantasy Baseball: Giants at Diamondbacks

This article is part of our Dream11 Fantasy Baseball series.

San Francisco Giants (15-18) at Arizona Diamondbacks (13-19)

Friday, August 28th, 9:40 PM EDT

Projected Starters

LHP Tyler Anderson (1-1, 3.45 ERA) vs RHP Zac Gallen (0-0, 2.25 ERA)

Game Preview

The Giants and the Diamondbacks have not been able to transform themselves into reliable playoff contenders this season, although that wasn't really the case in a season where both teams were in the midst of rebuilding periods. The Giants have a slightly better record compared to what the Diamondbacks have done, though. The pitching matchup features two competent arms in Zac Gallen and Tyler Anderson. Both have been overachieving a bit, but Gallen has posted better numbers across the board. It remains to be seen if he will able to contain the Giants' offense this time.

Injuries

Arizona Diamondbacks

Jeremy Beasley - 10-Day IL - Shoulder

8/16 1:43 PM EST - The Diamondbacks placed Beasley on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder strain, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Beasley hasn't appeared out of the Arizona bullpen since making his MLB debut Tuesday in Colorado, when he retired one of the three hitters he faced before exiting. According to Piecoro, the right-hander showed lower-than-normal velocity in that outing, which was likely caused by the shoulder injury. Arizona recalled Joel Payamps to take Beasley's spot in the bullpen.

Seth Beer - Out - Face

7/15 9:08 PM EST - Beer was diagnosed with a contusion after being hit in the face with a one-hopper during

7/15 9:08 PM EST - Beer was diagnosed with a contusion after being hit in the face with a one-hopper during Wednesday's intrasquad game, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Manager Torey Lovullo said the 23-year-old didn't sustain a concussion, so he appears to have escaped the situation with only a bruise. Beer missed some time early in summer training after testing positive for COVID-19, and he may take it easy for a couple days after Wednesday's incident.

Silvino Bracho - 60-Day IL - Elbow

7/5 6:11 PM EST - Bracho (elbow) has tested positive for COVID-19, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Bracho was already placed on the 60-day injured list Monday as he continues to recover from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in March of 2019. He suffered a setback in his recovery while play was suspended, so he might not be ready to play at any point in 2020. However, manager Torey Lovullo revealed Sunday that Bracho was one of three Diamondbacks to test positive for coronavirus, although he is asymptomatic.

Madison Bumgarner - 10-Day IL - Back

8/28 3:09 AM EST - Bumgarner (back) will throw a simulated game Saturday, Mark Faller of the Arizona Republic reports. Bumgarner had thrown two simulated games and a bullpen session, leading to speculation about a pending return Saturday, but the team is exercising caution. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Bumgarner is "extremely close" to returning and will sit down with the left-hander following the sim game to map out the plan for Bumgarner's return.

Andrew Chafin - 10-Day IL - Finger

8/22 3:07 AM EST - Chafin will wear a splint on his left index finger for the next week, Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports. The plan calls for the Diamondbacks to remove the splint at the end of next week and get a better sense of how the finger is doing and what the next steps will be. The left-handed Chafin has allowed six runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out 10 over 6.2 innings.

Jon Duplantier - Out - Elbow

7/10 5:15 AM EST - Duplantier (elbow) is slowly ramping up a throwing program, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Duplantier is working back from elbow soreness that cropped up in April. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said it's likely the right-hander will not be ready to go when the season begins July 24. As a rookie in 2019, Duplantier logged a 4.42 ERA over 36.2 innings mostly as a reliever. He was expected to serve in a starting role in 2020, though he is not currently part of the projected five-man rotation.

Merrill Kelly - 10-Day IL - Shoulder

8/27 12:49 PM EST - Kelly underwent a procedure earlier in the week to dissolve a blood clot in his right shoulder. Kelly is expected to miss the remainder of the 2020 season following the procedure. Prior to getting injured, the right-hander notched a 2.59 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 29:5 K:BB across five appearances (31.1 innings).

Mike Leake - Out - Opt Out

6/29 11:08 AM EST - Leake will opt out of participating in the 2020 season, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. He was included on the initial version of the Diamondbacks' 60-man roster and would have been fighting for a rotation spot in July. While Leake is the first known player to opt out of playing this year, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as Leake has made just shy of $95 million in his career and there are obviously health risks involved with playing during a pandemic. Alex Young now appears to be Arizona's sixth starter in case one of the top five guys gets injured. Leake says he looks forward to playing in 2021. Arizona will either pay him $18 million next season for the final year of his contract or buy him out for $5 million.

Domingo Leyba - Out - Suspension

3/6 12:13 PM EST - Leyba received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Leyba was called up for his major-league debut in September and made a quality first impression with a .280/.367/.440 slash line in 21 games, and he had a chance to begin the season in a utility role for the Diamondbacks. The 24-year-old will instead miss the first half of the season.

Corbin Martin - 10-Day IL - Elbow

8/19 9:37 PM EST - Martin (elbow) will be shut down for a couple weeks after suffering an oblique strain, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old is working his way back from Tommy John surgery last July, but his buildup will be interrupted due to the oblique strain. Martin figured to be a candidate to see the big leagues sometime in September, but that now appears unlikely since he won't be reevaluated for a few weeks.

San Francisco Giants

Tyler Beede - 60-Day IL - Elbow

6/29 12:51 PM EST - The Giants placed Beede (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. The transaction is merely procedural, as Beede has already been ruled out for the 2020 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March. His move to the 60-day IL opens up an extra spot on the 40-man roster for the Giants.

Aramis Garcia - 60-Day IL - Hip

8/25 2:31 PM EST - Garcia (hip) is ramping up his baseball activity, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He is recovering from a right hip labrum repair procedure and continues to rehab in Scottsdale. Garcia is progressing well, but even if he returns this season, it would likely be in a backup role.

Jordan Humphreys - Out - Personal

8/9 11:52 AM EST - Humphreys was placed on the restricted list Sunday. The 24-year-old was acquired from the Mets in exchange for Billy Hamilton last weekend, but he'll move to the restricted list before appearing for the team. It's unclear when Humphreys is expected to return to action.

Reyes Moronta - 60-Day IL - Shoulder

8/25 2:15 PM EST - Moronta (shoulder) could throw live batting practice as early as next week, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He has been throwing bullpen sessions at the alternate training site as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. Given what he is returning from and where he stands in his rehab, we could see Moronta back in the majors sometime in September.

Buster Posey - Out - Opt Out

7/23 2:01 PM EST - The Giants placed Posey on the restricted list July 10. The transaction is just a procedural one after Posey announced that same day that he would sit out the 2020 season, citing concerns about how playing amid a pandemic could jeopardize the health of his newborn twins. The Giants are carrying two catchers (Tyler Heineman and Rob Brantly) on the Opening Day roster, but it's unclear if either of the two will act as the clear-cut No. 1 option behind the plate.

Jeff Samardzija - 10-Day IL - Shoulder

8/25 2:11 PM EST - Samardzija (shoulder inflammation) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He has been throwing on flat ground and is progressing well. It sounds like Samardzija is making steady progress, but there will be several more checkpoints for him to hit after his bullpen session before he will be able to return to the big-league rotation.

Austin Slater - 10-Day IL - Groin

8/25 2:08 PM EST - Slater (groin/elbow) will begin baseball activities this weekend, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. His right elbow flexor strain is doing well and he has continued to throw without issues. Slater has been receiving treatments the last few days on his mild left groin strain and is making progress. It sounds like he could return sometime next week if all goes well.

Drew Smyly - 10-Day IL - Finger

8/25 2:13 PM EST - Smyly (finger) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. He continues to progress from a left index finger sprain. This will mark his second bullpen session, so he could soon advance to simulated games at the alternate training site.
