Leyba signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Friday, John Dreker of Pirates Prospects reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old utility infielder is already in Pirates camp. Leyba has some major-league experience but split 2022 between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso in the Padres organization, sporting a .755 OPS with 11 homers and 12 steals over 108 games. He'll likely begin 2023 at Triple-A Indianapolis.

After impressing following a call-up in September 2019, Leyba was earmarked to be a reserve infielder for the Diamondbacks last season. However, those plans were derailed following an 80-game suspension for a positive test for a performance enhancing drug. Major League Baseball ruled all 80-game suspensions handed out last season would be considered served in full in 2020, so Leyba is back where he was a year ago, battling for a utility infielder role. Leyba's calling card is high contact with a good eye. He's more of a gap hitter than a home-run threat. He's capable of playing all around the infield, though he's not a major threat to take away any of the starters' jobs. Leyba is in the mix for an endgame spot in NL-only as he'll likely add eligibility at shortstop and third base in-season.
Leyba debuted in late June and made sporadic appearances throughout the rest of the season, finishing with a .280/.367/.440 line in 30 plate appearances. The bulk of his season was spent at Triple-A Reno, where he hit .300/.351/.519 with 19 homers in 112 games, good for just a modest 107 wRC+ in the hitters' paradise of the Pacific Coast League. There doesn't appear to be a starting job open to Leyba to begin the season, but he could spend much of the year as a bench player, providing flexibility with his ability to play anywhere on the infield. He could get a bigger role if Jake Lamb underperforms or Arizona deals with injuries, in which case Leyba looks to have the skills to be competent but is unlikely to be a significant fantasy asset. He should be able to hit for a respectable average but doesn't have much power, and he didn't steal a single base in 2019.
Acquired in 2014 as part of a three-team deal that also netted Robbie Ray, the young Dominican batted .296/.355/.429 across High-A Visalia and Double-A Mobile last season. Once considered a top-10 prospect with the Tigers, Leyba blasted 10 home runs after never hitting more than two home runs in any of his previous full minor league seasons. Leyba also showed a good eye at the plate, particularly after making the jump to Double-A, where he posted a 9.8 percent walk rate and 12.6 percent strikeout rate in 174 plate appearances. Heading into 2017, the team will likely want to see Leyba sustain the success at Double-A Jackson for a full season. At 21 years old, Leyba is a young hitter to watch, especially if he sticks at shortstop, which has been his primary position since the trade to Arizona.
