2025 Projections
Sitting out start of 2021
Leake remains a free agent and doesn't plan on pitching to open the 2021 season, Dave Clark of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old opted out of the 2020 campaign and became a free agent in October when the Diamondbacks declined his option for 2021. Leake reportedly turned down multiple offers, though it's unclear which teams were interested. The right-hander had a 4.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 127:27 K:BB over 197 innings between Arizona and Seattle during 2019, and he shouldn't have a problem latching on somewhere if or when he decides to retake the mound.

Leake was a 2019 acquisition by Arizona in the Diamondbacks' attempt to push into the postseason. He was somewhat effective, given the run environment, but saw his strikeout rate plummet from 17.4% to 10.4% going from the AL to the NL that season. Leake was one of the first players to opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-related concerns, and Arizona declined his team option in December, making him a free agent. The veteran righty should not have a problem finding a home given he made 30 or more starts in every season from 2012-2019. It is tough to find that type of reliability these days, almost as tough as it is to carry his lack of strikeouts and ratio volatility on a fantasy roster. To roster Leake, you have to have two other pitchers who can pick up his slack while Leake secures wins and does little else for you.
