Drops split decision in Vegas
MiddleweightPFL
July 10, 2021
Akhmedov lost to Brad Tavares via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC 264 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Akhmedov hung in there, but the judges -- or at least two of them -- got this one correct. Akhmedov battled Tavares punch-for-punch, but the later fired off jabs and quick shots while the former loaded up and swung for the bleachers with every punch. The other big issue was that Akhmedov did nothing with the two successful takedowns that he did manage to land. Despite dropping two of his previous three, Akhmedov is still sporting a 6-3-1 mark in his past nine fights dating back to November 2016.
Taking on Brad Tavares
MiddleweightPFL
March 26, 2021
Akhmedov will fight Brad Tavares in a middleweight match at the UFC's event on July 10, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akhmedov earned a victory over Tom Breese back in January, and he'll now get a chance to extend his winning streak to two. Since making his UFC debut November of 2013, Akhmedov boasts a 9-4-1 record with the promotion.
Battles through adversity in win
MiddleweightPFL
January 20, 2021
Akhmedov defeated Tom Breese via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 1:41 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Island 8 on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Akhmedov went for the takedown early and was able to end up on top after escaping a guillotine attempt. He certainly didn't waste that top position, landing some big ground-and-pound while racking up control time. It's a faster pace than we're used to from Akhmedov, but it seemed to work to his advantage (though it may have drained the gas tank). Breese was eventually able to reverse position and threaten with a heel hook before taking the back of a tired Akhmedov in the ensuing scramble. Akhmedov entered Round 2 on the wrong side of the momentum equation, and quickly found himself in a Breese calf slicer attempt. He escaped and ended up in a favorable top position that allowed him to sink in a fight-ending arm-triangle choke. It wasn't always pretty, but Akhmedov got the job done as a slight betting underdog.
Fight bumped back
MiddleweightPFL
January 12, 2021
Akhmedov's scheduled fight against Tom Breese will now take place Jan. 20.
ANALYSIS
The fight was initially set to take place Saturday but will be bumped back by four days. A reason for the switch was not disclosed.
Fight with Breese set for January
MiddleweightPFL
December 7, 2020
Akhmedov (undisclosed) agreed Monday to face Tom Breese (12-2-0) in a middleweight fight at the UFC's Jan. 16 event, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Following his unanimous-decision loss to Chris Weidman on Aug. 9, Akhmedov (20-5-1) had agreed to a Dec. 12 fight with Ronaldo Souza, only to back out in October due to an unspecified reason. Akhmedov's addition to the Jan. 16 card implies that whatever issue prevented him from fighitng Souza is no longer a concern. "Wolverine" owns an 8-4-1 record since making his UFC debut in November 2013.
