Ends Hall of Fame career
Rua lost to Ihor Potieria via TKO (punches) at 4:05 of Round 1 at UFC 283 on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
ANALYSIS
That will conclude the future Hall of Fame career of Shogun. Having turned 41 years of age in late November, Rua, a professional for more than 20 years, is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix Champion. Included in Shogun's legendary run were victories over Rampage Jackson, Lil Nog, Alistair Overeem, Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman, Forrest Griffin, and Chuck Liddell, among others. The fact Shogun dropped his final three UFC bouts is obviously irrelevant, as is his 11-12-1 career mark with the company. His legacy as one of the greatest in the history of the sport is not up for debate.

Booked for UFC 283 in Rio
Rua will fight Ihor Potieria at UFC 283 on Jan. 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After losing to Ovince Saint Preux via split decision in May, Rua will fight in front of a home crowd for what could be the last fight of his career. Rua's last win was in July of 2020 when he beat Antonio Rogerio Nogueira via split decision, so if this ends up being his last fight, he'll look to go out on a high note against Potieria, who is still seeking his first UFC victory.

Drops snoozer to OSP
Rua lost to Ovince Saint Preux via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 27-30) at UFC 274 on Saturday in Phoenix.
ANALYSIS
As Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier correctly pointed out on commentary, it's impossible to be upset with the decision because neither man accomplished much of anything. This fight quickly devolved into an extremely slow-placed boxing match. On the surface, that would have appeared to play right into Shogun's hands, but he was simply either unable or unwilling to engage with OSP with regularity. Shogun literally spent the final ten seconds of the fight running away, which was an extremely poor visual. Rua will celebrate his 20th year as a professional fighter this coming November. He will also turn 41 years of age that same month. Shogun is somehow 5-3-1 in his past nine fights dating back to August 2015, but it's clear he's lost multiple steps. Any forthcoming appearance inside the Octagon could conceivably be his last.

Set for fight in May
Rua will take on Ovince Saint Preux in a light heavyweight bout at UFC 274 on May 7, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Rua last fought in November 2020, losing to Paul Craig via TKO (punches) in the second round. The 30-year-old boasts a 27-12-1 overall MMA record, but his 10 losses with UFC is the most in the history of their light heavyweight division. His opponent Saint Preux last fought in June, losing to Tanner Bouser via KO (knee and punches).

Drops rematch to Paul Craig
Rua lost to Paul Craig via TKO (punches) at 3:36 of Round 2 at UFC 255 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It was an uninspiring performance by Shogun and one in which he looked considerably worse than the first fight between these two some 53 weeks ago. Hopelessly outclassed on the mat and ineffective on the feet, Rua found himself on the defensive constantly. Shogun -- who turns 39 is four days -- is simply too slow to properly defend himself in the later stages of 2020. The fact he was battered by a submission specialist in Craig tells you all you need to know. ESPN's Ariel Helwani reported earlier Saturday that Shogun has two additional fights on his UFC contract following this one. The company needs to be exceedingly careful regarding who they match him up against in they plan on running the Brazilian out there a couple more times. His 10 losses with the company are the most in UFC light heavyweight history.
