Ends night with contract-winning effort
Abdul-Malik defeated Wes Schultz via TKO (punches) at 3:55 of Round 2 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of four fighters to be awarded an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
Despite entering as a (-350) betting favorite, the biggest on the card, it was a close Round 1 that saw Schultz jump ahead 26-to-16 in the significant striking total. In Round 2, Abdul-Malik was the aggressor on the feet, but a fearless Schultz continued to press forward and found success with the takedown (twice). Abdul-Malik was ultimately able to answer with some grappling of his own, as he reversed position during a Schultz armbar attempt. From there, he unleashed some brutal ground-and-pound with elbows that closed the show with just over a minute left in the round. The middleweight division now has a 6-0, 26-year-old prospect in the form of Abdul-Malik, who last competed under the banner of LFA.
