Quickly taps after weight miss
FlyweightUFC
January 11, 2025
Johnson lost to Felipe Bunes via submission (armbar) at 2:04 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
What a disaster. Johnson missed weight by 2.5 pounds Friday morning and then barely lasted two minutes Saturday evening. He and Bunes got involved in a wild scramble, at which point the later was able to clamp on a deep armbar. Johnson rolled around admirably in hopes of breaking it, but Bunes readjusted, and Jose was eventually forced to tap out. With losses in three of his last four fights, Johnson's UFC run is on life support.

Johnson missed the flyweight limit by 2.5 pounds in his initial weigh in attempt ahead of Saturday's bout with Felipe Bunes at UFC Vegas 101, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson is very unlikely to have enough time to shed the necessary weight ahead of his final weigh-in attempt and will need to forfeit a significant portion of his fight purse if his bout with Felipe Bunes is to proceed as scheduled.

Johnson will fight Felipe Bunes at UFC Vegas 101 on Jan. 11, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has dropped two of his first three fights since joining the UFC in August 2023, but he'll have a chance to get back to .500 against Bunes, who dropped his first fight in the promotion back in January.
Falls in flyweight debut

Johnson lost to Asu Almabayev via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Dropping down to flyweight after a run at bantamweight, Johnson, at 6-foot, became the tallest 125-pounder in company history. Sadly, the good times ended there for Jose. He was overwhelmed by the grappling game of Almabayev, giving up six takedowns for 11:24 worth of control time, making it impossible for Johnson to win a decision. It remains to be seen in which weight class Johnson plans to compete moving forward, but if he can make flyweight without issue, that's probably the correct room for the 29-year-old.
Fighting June 15 in Vegas

June 10, 2024
Johnson will face Asu Almabayev in a flyweight matchup at UFC Vegas 93 on June 15, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will apparently be moving down a weight class for this one, so the scales will be worth watching, as the 16-8-0 fighter is massive for the division, standing at 6-0 with a 71-inch reach (advantages of eight and six inches, respectively). Johnson most recently picked up his first official UFC win over Chad Anheliger via submission last November. He had an April fight against Lucas Rocha booked but was forced to withdraw due to undisclosed reasons. Johnson now draws Almabayev, who is a perfect 2-0 in the UFC and hasn't tasted defeat since the regional circuits in 2017.
No longer booked against Rocha

Johnson is not fighting Lucas Rocha at UFC Vegas 90 on April 6, according to Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
For an undisclosed reason, Johnson withdrew from the fight with Rocha, which had been scheduled just a little over one month ago. As a result, Rocha is taking on Joshua Van instead.
