Rolls through Brian Kelleher
BantamweightUFC
July 20, 2024
Gibson defeated Brian Kelleher via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:58 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Gibson has his first victory in his second stint with the company and did so in emphatic fashion. Facing an opponent in Kelleher who appears to be completely finished, Cody pushed the paced from the very start, and Kelleher crumbled. Gibson dragged his opponent to the mat on two occasions for beautifully transitioning to the arm-triangle which closed the show. Gibson will be 37 years old in September and has struggled in the UFC, but he has some physical gifts and is capable of a strong performance like this once in a while.
Struggles continue in Vegas
BantamweightUFC
March 23, 2024
Gibson lost to Miles Johns via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Originally scheduled to face Davey Grant here, Gibson agreed to this opponent change about two weeks ago. He probably wishes he hadn't. Cody was unable to get anything going offensively throughout the course of the bout. While he was by no means overwhelmed by Johns, a pair of takedowns and 6:29 worth of control time were more than enough to ensure Gibson wouldn't be leaving with the win. Cody's second UFC run hasn't gone much better than his first. He dropped The Ultimate Fighter finale to Brad Katona last August and was decisioned by Johns here. Gibson could be looking at being cut from the company for a second time.
Gets new opponent
BantamweightUFC
March 8, 2024
Gibson is now slated to fight Miles Johns at UFC Vegas 88 on March 23 in the place of Davey Grant, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibson gets a new opponent with roughly two weeks of notice. Johns received a suspension back in December for testing positive for a banned substance, but he's served the entire period. A fellow bantamweight, Johns has quietly won four of his last five matches.
Set to face Davey Grant
BantamweightUFC
January 7, 2024
Gibson will face Davey Grant in a bantamweight at UFC Vegas 88 on March 23, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Grant is 38 years old already and is coming off a loss, so Gibson has a good chance of bouncing back here following his recent loss to Brad Katona. This will be his UFC debut.
Comes up short in TUF finale
BantamweightUFC
August 20, 2023
Gibson lost to Brad Katona via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 27-30) at UFC 292 on Saturday in Boston, coming up short in his bid to become the bantamweight winner of season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter.
ANALYSIS
Gibson's night was far from a total loss, as he'll take home a $50,000 bonus after this matchup was awarded Fight of the Night honors. He also put forth an incredibly competitive effort, winning the total striking battle in the first two rounds and even wobbling Katona a bit early in Round 3. When it was all said and done, only four strikes separated the two men in a matchup in which 324 significant strikes were landed. At the end of the evening in Dana White's post-fight press conference, White acknowledged that Gibson would earn a UFC contract as well despite the defeat. He'll be a tough out for anyone looking to break into the ranks of the bantamweight division.
