Cleared to suit up Sunday
SLos Angeles Chargers
December 13, 2024
Jefferson (hamstring) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's Week 15 game versus Tampa Bay, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jefferson missed this past Sunday's loss to Kansas City, but he was able to log an LP/LP/FP practice progression this week. As such, he's in line to return to action Sunday. With Los Angeles' starters in the secondary healthy, Jefferson will likely play primarily on special teams unless an injury ahead of him on the depth chart requires him to log more defensive work.

Jefferson's first two years in Baltimore haven't quite lived up to the standard he set in his final year in Arizona when he racked up 96 tackles and established himself as one of the top box safeties in the league. He's gone for 79 and 74 tackles over the last two years, respectively, appearing in 30 of a possible 32 games. Jefferson has a new compatriot in the defensive backfield in Earl Thomas, who is replacing Eric Weddle. Thomas is younger and more athletic than Weddle, which will allow him to play a more rangy, center field brand of free safety and free up Jefferson to hunt the ball carrier in the box. Jefferson figures to be a fringe top-30 defensive back in IDP formats who relies on racking up tackles more than creating turnovers to bolster his value.
Billed as one of the top IDP defensive backs coming into 2017, Jefferson's first season in Baltimore was something of a disappointment. His tackle volume dropped from 96 to 79 and his solo tackle count was 56, which ranked 30th among safeties. Jefferson is entering his age-26 season and his second year in Baltimore, so a bounce-back is in play. The strength of Jefferson's game is his run support, so even with a new defensive coordinator in the fold, he'll still be put in spots where he can be a reliable source of tackles. It'll be tough for him to match his career-year in 2016 with the Cardinals, but an improvement from what he showed in 2017 is certainly in play, which makes him a viable IDP defensive back.
Jefferson was a productive player in college at Oklahoma but went undrafted in 2013 after testing poorly in pre-draft workouts. If his four years in Arizona were any indication, this is a case of a player whose film was much more insightful than his 40 time. Jefferson served as one of Arizona's lead defensive backs over the last three years, including a breakout 2016 season in which he nearly hit triple-digit tackles. After joining an improved Baltimore defense this offseason, Jefferson should plug in for more of the same.
With Johnson headed to Tennessee and Tyrann Mathieu recovering from a torn ACL, Jefferson should have a chance to earn a career high in defensive snaps this year. Splitting his time between defense and special teams the last two years, Jefferson totaled 157 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions while playing 1,436 snaps. Playing on perhaps the best-schemed defense in the league, there's reason to think Jefferson could hold a good amount of IDP upside if he could push for the 900-snap range on defense. It's hard to see how he wouldn't get those snaps.
The selection of Deone Bucannon in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft should have kept Jefferson in the periphery, but the latter responded by landing the starting strong safety spot out of training camp and further solidified his status as a starter with 50 tackles in the first seven games. His season turned in the last contest of that run, though, when he suffered a concussion. In the subsequent four games, he played a combined 65 snaps, which contributed to a diminished role as the weeks wound on. With Bucannon poised to handle the bulk of the work at SS this season, Jefferson's IDP relevance could again be linked to a deficiency in the linebacker corps, as it was a season ago.
Despite his status as an undrafted free agent in 2013, Jefferson was active for all 16 games and racked up 24 tackles (19 solo). Nevertheless, the organization selected Deone Bucannon in the first round of this year's draft, placing a shadow over Jefferson's status in the defensive backfield. Jefferson has responded by taking all the first-team reps during OTAs and minicamp, which has extended into training camp with his listing as the Cardinals' starting strong safety.

Officially ends retirement
SLos Angeles Chargers
June 14, 2024
Jefferson, who was out of the NFL in 2023, ended his retirement Friday by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Chargers, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jefferson was still involved with the NFL last season, working as a scouting department intern with the Ravens following a May 2023 retirement announcement. The identity of the team that's coaxed the veteran safety out of retirement isn't entirely surprising -- current Los Angeles general manager Joe Hortiz was the Ravens' director of player personnel during Jefferson's internship in Baltimore, and current Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter was Jefferson's defensive backs coach with the Ravens from 2017-19.
