Snags interception in team debut
SLos Angeles Chargers
December 2, 2024
Maye recorded three total tackles (one solo) and an interception in Sunday's 17-13 win over the Falcons.
ANALYSIS
Maye was claimed by the Chargers on Wednesday and he was able to make a major impact in his team debut, picking off Kirk Cousins in the fourth quarter. The safety played 19 of the team's 76 defensive snaps in the contest and will likely operate in a similar role moving forward with Los Angeles.

The former Jets safety dealt with separate rib and shoulder injuries that limited to just 10 games during his first season with the Saints in 2022. Nevertheless, Maye still proved highly effective when healthy, tallying three games of nine or more tackles while paired alongside fellow safety Tyrann Mathieu. So long as he remains healthy, the 30-year-old Maye should serve as a cornerstone in the secondary that's capable of making an impact both as a tackler and in pass coverage.
After playing his first five years with the Jets, Maye signed a three-year, $28.5 million deal with the Saints this offseason. The veteran safety will fill the void created by the departure of Marcus Williams. Maye played in just six games in 2021 before suffering a season-ending torn Achilles. The 2017 second-round pick will look to return to his pre-injury form in 2022 as an impact player capable of solid tackle totals and big plays.
Maye's fourth NFL season last year was his best to date, as the safety produced career highs in tackles (88) and sacks (2.0) while tying his previous high-water mark with two interceptions. He'll remain with the Jets under the franchise tag in 2021 and should continue to deliver robust tackle totals as the most established member of New York's otherwise lackluster secondary.
There will be extra pressure on Maye to deliver now that fellow young safety Jamal Adams is no longer with the Jets, but Maye's been a successful player in his own right since being selected in the second round of the 2017 draft out of Florida. He missed 10 games in his second season due a shoulder injury but was able to dress for all 16 games in the other two campaigns, recording 74 tackles as a rookie and 65 in 2019. While his stats don't jump off the page, Maye should be kept busy covering for an underwhelming Jets cornerback corps.
The Jets have infamously struggled with second-round selections, but New York appears to have bucked that trend with Maye. He excelled as a rookie last season, recording 79 tackles and a pair of interceptions. New York beefed up its secondary with the offseason addition of cornerback Trumaine Johnson, which should help Maye find even more success at the safety position in Year 2. Owners in IDP formats should keep Maye's name in mind - especially those in keeper/dynasty leagues.

Release from Saints forthcoming
SFree Agent
March 1, 2024
Katherine Terrell of ESPN reports the Saints' forthcoming release of Maye will save the team only $1.1 million against the salary cap.
ANALYSIS
The veteran safety restructured the three-year, $28.5 million deal he signed with the Saints before the 2022 season last year, explaining the modest savings despite Maye having been slated to count $9.6 million against the cap next season. Maye ultimately played in only 17 of a possible 34 games for New Orleans, with three of his 2023 absences the result of a season-opening suspension for a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.
