Justin Hunter

A 2013 second-round selection, Hunter never emerged as a consistent threat in Tennessee, ultimately getting released at the end of last preseason. He then caught on with a receiver-needy Buffalo squad, yet caught only 10 passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games. Hunter's size (6-4, 203 pounds) could make him an occasional deep-ball/red-zone target for QB Ben Roethlisberger, but he'll probably have to fight for a roster spot as a depth receiver for Pittsburgh.

The Hunter hype train derailed in 2015, as the athletic receiver underwhelmed for a third straight season since being picked in the second round of the 2013 draft. Quarterback Marcus Mariota preferred to throw to more polished route runners, and second-year man Dorial Green-Beckham seems to have the inside track to supplanting Hunter as the main vertical threat. Hunter will have to show an unprecedented level of maturity and attention to detail if he's to have any chance of topping 500 receiving yards for the first time in his career.

After a rookie year in which he flashed big-play ability, Hunter found himself on a lot of sleeper lists in 2014, but he never saw consistent opportunities in an erratic Titans offense. At 6-4, 203, with 4.44 40 speed and exceptional athleticism, Hunter still managed 17.8 YPC, but caught only 42 percent of the balls thrown his way for a pedestrian 7.4 YPT. Part of the problem was the revolving door at quarterback, and this year Hunter will have to adapt to another one in rookie Marcus Mariota. Moreover, the Titans brought in more competition in the form of free-agent signees Hakeem Nicks and Harry Douglas and second-round pick Dorial Green-Beckham to go with incumbents Kendall Wright and tight end Delanie Walker. But Hunter has the physical skills to be a star should he show more consistency and develop a rapport with Mariota. Hunter also missed the last four games of the year with a lacerated spleen, but is healthy and expected to be ready for training camp.

Last year’s second round pick, Hunter showed flashes of big-play ability, catching four balls of 40-plus yards on only 42 targets. At 6-4, 203 with a 40-inch vertical, and running a 4.44 40, Hunter has the physical specs to be a No. 1 receiver, and with Kenny Britt gone, the Titans need one. Kendall Wright and Nate Washington reside atop the team’s depth chart, but neither profiles as a red-zone threat or consistent downfield playmaker.

Taken in the second round by a team that already had Kenny Britt, Nate Washington and Kendall Wright on the roster, Hunter might seem like a long shot to make an impact this year. But given Washington's expendability and Britt's constant injury problems and run-ins with the law, Hunter could get his chance before too long. At 6-4, 200, running a 4.4 40 and posting a 40-inch vertical leap, Hunter is arguably the most athletic receiver from April's draft. He's not especially quick in short areas, though so he profiles more as a deep threat who’s hard to catch once he reaches his top gear. Hunter also could make a nice red-zone target and is probably better positioned to fill Britt's shoes than either Wright or Washington, should Britt go down.
