2024 Fantasy Outlook
No player better represents the idea that just about any running back can thrive in Kyle Shanahan's offense than Mason. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2022, Mason has averaged 5.6 yards per carry for the 49ers, and while he lacks breakaway speed, his power and sheer refusal to go down have resulted in some impressive yards after contact in a small sample. The 49ers backfield seemingly got more crowded this offseason when they drafted Isaac Guerendo in the fourth round, but it ended up working out well for Mason when Guerendo and Elijah Mitchell both missed most of training camp with injuries. Mitchell was then place on season-ending injured reserve in late August, leaving Mason as the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey to start the season. Read Past Outlooks

Now officially on IR
Mason (ankle) was officially placed on injured reserve Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It was announced earlier in the week Mason would be placed on injured reserve, but the team waited to officially make that move until the end of the week. Isaac Guerendo will get the first crack at filling in for both Mason and Christian McCaffrey (knee), who was also placed on injured reserve following his Week 13 injury, but pass-catching specialist Patrick Taylor also figures to have some role too. San Francisco plucked a couple of known names to at minimum operate as depth given the myriad of injuries to its running backs, with Israel Abanikanda and practice-squad callup Ke'Shawn Vaughn joining the team earlier this week.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Mason fought his way onto the 49ers' 53-man roster last preseason and suited up for 19 of the team's 20 games (including playoffs). The undrafted rookie spent most of the year on special teams, but he was able to get some run as a backup in the second half of the schedule. Mason performed particularly well over a three-game stretch from Weeks 13-15, when he accrued 171 rushing yards on just 23 attempts. The Georgia Tech product should return as San Francisco's third running back in 2023 behind Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Back to lead role?
Mason could reclaim the lead role in San Francisco's backfield down the stretch, as Christian McCaffrey suffered a knee injury during Sunday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Mason excelled when McCaffrey was hurt early in the season, rushing for 685 yards and three touchdowns through Week 8. McCaffrey reclaimed a workhorse role after returning, limiting Mason to six carries in McCaffrey's three games back prior to Sunday's matchup in Buffalo. Isaac Guerendo could work in a complementary role alongside Mason should McCaffrey miss additional time.
