The Cardinals signed Kennard to their active roster Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Kennard's promotion isn't much of a surprise considering he was elevated to Arizona's active roster prior to both of the team's first two contests. Through Week 2, the 31-year-old linebacker has registered two total tackles, with one in each game thus far. Expect Kennard to continue operating as a rotational piece for the Cardinals defense when the team hosts the Rams on Sunday.

Fresh off seven-sack campaigns in both 2018 and 2019 with the Lions, Kennard joined the third team of his career in the Cardinals this offseason. With the imposing Chandler Jones on the other side, Kennard should have ample chances to stalk opposing quarterbacks, especially in a defense without much other pass-rush talent outside of Haason Reddick. Kennard may also yield some snaps to rookie first-rounder Isaiah Simmons, hurting his potential for the sacks that don't go to Jones in this unit.
Kennard didn't quite make the impact many hoped he would after landing a lucrative contract from Detroit ahead of the 2018 campaign. When it was all said and done, the 28-year-old managed just 46 tackles and seven sacks on over 850 snaps. There's justified optimism for increased productivity in his second year in Motown, though, not only for having a year of experience under Matt Patricia to build off of, but also because of the suddenly stacked defensive line Kennard will play off of (Trey Flowers and Mike Daniels were added to a defensive line group that already included Damon Harrison, Da'Shawn Hand, A'Shawn Robinson and Romeo Okwara). While the 61 tackles he had in 2016 with the Giants is probably Kennard's ceiling in that department, Kennard could realistically challenge for double-digit sacks in 2019.
Arguably the biggest offseason addition to the Lions defense, Kennard comes to Detroit on a three-year, $18.75 million contract to operate on the edge next to second-year middle linebacker Jarrad Davis. Playing in a similar alignment his last four seasons with the Giants, Kennard has averaged 51 tackles while accounting for 9.5 sacks and one interception in the same time span. With versatility key in Matt Patricia's defense, Kennard likely will be asked to continue doing a lot of different things from pass rushing to run support in Detroit. However, his jack-of-all-trades role hasn't made him IDP-worthy in the past, and that seems unlikely to change in 2018.
Likely starting strong side linebacker, but has competition for snaps from Mark Herzlich among others.
Starting strong-side linebacker. Kennard had a promising rookie season in 2014 and even tallied 4.5 sacks in spot duty, but it's hard to rack up big numbers from the strong side.
Rookie fifth-round pick will have a shot at regular snaps after a strong camp.
