The 49ers released Ford (back) on Wednesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Back in 2019, the Niners sent the Chiefs a second-round pick for Ford, who then signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract. He had 6.5 sacks in 11 games his first season with the Niners, but then just three sacks in seven games the past two years combined. Ford's struggles with health stretched into the offseason, with a back injury keeping him off the field at OTAs and June minicamp. He's been bothered by his back since last fall, with 49ers general manager John Lynch saying in March that he didn't have much hope for Ford to contribute in 2022. The 31-year-old pass rusher may require another surgery if he wants to continue his playing career.

Durability hasn't been Ford's strong suit, so it might be unfair to hope for a healthy full season from him. If he could arrange it, though, it would potentially set the conditions for a career year. He posted 14 tackles and 6.5 sacks on just 232 snaps, and if he could stay healthy for a full season he would project for as many as 800 or so snaps. Perhaps he'll find it more difficult to get to the quarterback with DeForest Buckner no longer around, but first-round replacement Javon Kinlaw should be similarly suited to drawing double teams.
Considered the goat (not the G.O.A.T.) of the AFC Championship Game for his costly offsides penalty, Ford found himself exiled from Kansas City and moved to the west coast in exchange for a second-round pick. The 28-year-old is a proven pass rusher, totaling 23 sacks over his last two full seasons as a starter. Ford couldn't have landed in a better situation, as he'll line up opposite second overall pick Nick Bosa to ensure that offenses can't slant protection to either side.
Coming off a career-best 10 sacks in 2016, Ford was limited to just six games for the Chiefs last season due to a back injury. Following Tamba Hali's release, Ford is expected to see the vast majority of snaps opposite Justin Houston this season.
With Justin Houston (knee) sidelined for an indefinite amount of time, Ford figures to latch on to the starting outside linebacker role opposite Tamba Hali. A 2014 first-round selection, Ford has failed to live up to his billing through his first two campaign. The third-year linebacker says he’s begun working smarter rather than overtraining to prepare himself for the primary role.
Ford's rookie season in 2014 didn't go as planned, as the first-round pick didn't start a single game. He totaled just eight tackles (four solo) and 1.5 sacks for the season, and with Tamba Hali and Justin Houston still on the roster for 2015, he'll likely serve in a backup role once again.
The Chiefs selected Ford with the 23rd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He likely won’t be anything more than a pass-rushing specialist this season but he could eventually be the answer at linebacker if the Chiefs fail to re-sign Tamba Hali after this season. Ford is an explosive edge-rusher but he lacks the necessary cover skills to be an every-down player at this point in his career.

DESan Francisco 49ers
March 28, 2022
Ford likely will be released by the 49ers in the near future, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Speaking to reporters Monday, general manager John Lynch acknowledged that the edge rusher's difficulties staying healthy made it tough to justify bringing him back in 2022. "I don't see a lot of hope with him being a factor for us on the field moving forward," Lynch said. Ford managed three sacks in six games last season and still can make an impact when he's in the lineup, but he hasn't played a full schedule since 2018 with Kansas City.
