The Bears released Trevathan (knee) on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Trevathan appeared in just five games for Chicago, logging 19 tackles (eight solo) before finishing the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury. Since Chicago isn't waiving him in an injury settlement, Trevathan is presumably healthy again heading into the 2022 campaign. After spending the last six seasons with the Bears, the 31-year-old will now attempt to find a new team.

Signed through 2022 and going into his age-31 season, Trevathan posted 113 tackles in 2020 and averaged more than 6.3 tackles per game in each of the last six campaigns, giving him a steady scoring floor among linebackers. But durability has been an issue. Despite playing 16 games in two of the last three years, he's missed at least four games three times since 2015. While he's added one or two sacks per season in each of the last five years, Trevathan's value as an IDP primarily is based on tackles.
Only once over the last six seasons has Trevathan played a full 16-game slate, but when on the field he's pretty much a lock to average at least seven tackles per game, which he's done in each of his four years with the Bears. He'll go into this season locked in as a starting inside linebacker with Roquan Smith and should continue to be a reliable source of tackles. But unless fantasy owners can place an IDP on an IR spot when missing time to injury, Trevathan is a second-tier fantasy option. In leagues without an IR spot, he's best treated as a streaming option due to the injury concerns.
Since 2015, Trevathan has averaged enough tackles per game to consistently put him on pace for 100 stops per full season. Although he's had a couple major health concerns in his career, he's only missed one game due to injury over three of the last four campaigns. Playing on a defense that's loaded with talent, he should have little trouble maintaining his status as one of the more reliable tacklers in the league. Moreover, he's shown an ability to make big plays after intercepting five passes and collecting five sacks over the past four years. While he won't be a top-level IDP, he's worthy of a roster spot in leagues that favor strong tackle totals.
Although Trevathan has been a highly-productive player during his career, he's missed 25 of 64 games over the last four seasons. When healthy for an entire campaign, he can be counted on to rack up 100 tackles, but he's reached that number just twice in his six years in the league. His durability issues make him a difficult player to draft with confidence in IDP leagues, but when he's on the field, he's an asset. Along with an ability to pile up stops, he's a decent pass rusher, recording three sacks over his last 21 games.
Prior to rupturing the patellar tendon in his right knee in Week 12 last season, Trevathan was living up to the expectations that come with a four-year contract, possessing the second-most tackles (66) on the Bears to that point in the campaign. Due to the nature of the injury, his status for training camp remains up in the air. Having said that, if he can make a full recovery, he'd be a great source of tackles, at the very least.
Trevathan made his way from Denver to Chicago in free agency, reuniting him with former Broncos coach John Fox and plugging into a three-down role with the Bears in the process. Although knee troubles wiped out most of Trevathan's 2014, he's otherwise been a standout producer, combining for 238 tackles (161 solo), two sacks and five interceptions between 2013 and 2015. While the change of scenery might normally create some uncertainty in a projection, Fox's familiarity with Trevathan means he'll likely be put in the same positions in which he succeeded for Denver.
Trevathan's 2014 season was wiped out by injuries as he played only 99 snaps. He suffered a knee fracture in August and promptly re-injured the knee in two comeback attempts, one in October and one in December. Trevathan, who posted 129 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and three forced fumbles in 2013, will likely step back into a three-down role with the arrival of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who has a history of coaxing high sack numbers from his inside linebackers. His durability makes him a little risky, but his upside is considerable.
Trevathan doesn't boast sterling draft or recruiting pedigree, and yet he turned himself into one of the league's better linebackers as a second-year player in 2013. Just one year after arriving in the NFL as a relatively unheralded sixth-round pick, Trevathan established himself as the top pure linebacker on the Denver defense, setting aside entrenched veteran Wesley Woodyard as the team's tackle leader. Trevathan finished the year with 129 tackles (88 solo), two sacks and three interceptions, tossing in three forced fumbles. That well-rounded production of tackles, sacks and interceptions probably isn't a fluke: while he tested poorly in timed drills, Trevathan was wildly productive at Kentucky, posting 287 tackles, five sacks and four interceptions in his final 25 games. With Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware harassing opposing offenses, Trevathan should continue picking off passes at an above-average rate. In addition, Woodyard is now playing for Tennessee, meaning Trevathan might have access to even more tackles than he did a year ago. The Broncos don't have any other tackle threats among their linebackers.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely to be cut
LBChicago Bears
February 3, 2022
Trevathan is likely to be cut by the Bears after the first of June, Alyssa Barbieri of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran linebacker would cost the Bears only $2.4 million in dead money if cut after that date, as opposed to $8.9 million if released prior to the first of June. Trevathan who had two stints on injured reserve in 2021, including a season-ending one, was limited to just five games and 19 tackles on the campaign. With his age-32 season upcoming, Barbieri notes it would likely be a prudent time to cut ties.
