Flowers put together a disappointing campaign in 2015, failing to record a single interception in a season for the first time in his career while managing just 33 tackles. Reportedly in much better shape, Flowers still figures to be the starting cornerback opposite Jason Verrett and should be a candidate for a bounceback season.
Flowers is the veteran leader of the corner backs and finished 2014 leading the team with three interceptions and 11 passes defensed in 14 games. He teams up with Jason Verrett to form a solid tandem at corner for years to come.
The signing of Flowers will immediately improve the San Diego secondary and will allow rookie Jason Verrett to develop slowly if necessary. It remains to be seen who will start where and in which positions, but Flowers, Shareece Wright and Verrett will all likely get a ton of playing time.
Playing in 15 games in 2012, Flowers turned in the worst tackle production of his career with only 48 total takedowns. With a growing reputation as one of the league's premier cornerbacks, Flowers does not have the ball thrown at him enough to generate the statistics that would warrant IDP use.
Flowers can likely expect to see only a modest target volume now that Brandon Carr has left Kansas City, as the bull’s-eye on replacement Stanford Routt is bigger than the one on Carr or Flowers. Still, even if opposing quarterbacks prefer to target Routt, Flowers' excellent ball skills will let him make the most of the opportunities that do head his way. Give Flowers a boost if your league rewards passes defended, because he's about as good as anyone when it comes to that category – he has 70 in his four-year career despite missing four games, not to mention 13 interceptions (three returned for touchdowns) to help make up for his low tackle totals.
Flowers has compiled at least 65 total tackles and two interceptions each of his three seasons. While his ceiling seems low as an IDP, so does his floor, making him a safe, yet unspectacular option.
Despite battling shoulder woes for much of the year, Flowers finished the 2009 campaign with 65 tackles, five interceptions, 23 passes defended and two forced fumbles. In other words, he was one of the best fantasy cornerbacks available, and there's no reason to think he won't remain in CB1 territory this season. He's willing to throw his body around to rack up tackles, and he utilizes his great recovery speed and ball skills to post strong coverage stats. Although Kansas City's lack of team success holds him back from the spotlight, he deserves to be mentioned among the league's best young cornerbacks. Fortunately for fantasy owners, that lack of name recognition might work in your favor.
In leagues that require starting cornerbacks, Flowers emerged as a useful option in his rookie campaign, finishing with 69 tackles and two interceptions. His skills were a nice fit for Herm Edwards' Cover-2 scheme, but Kansas City's defensive overhaul will have Flowers adjusting to a new system that may not be as conducive to his aggressiveness against the run. If he makes a smooth adjustment to the new defense, he should again be a useful IDP.
The second-round pick is expected to win a starting cornerback position and should hold some IDP value as long as he is on the field.
