After spending 31 games with the Rockets to open the 2016-17 campaign, Ennis was eventually dealt to the Lakers at the trade deadline. He averaged just 6.3 minutes in Houston, but saw his workload increase to 17.8 minutes across 22 games in Los Angeles. While the added playing time translated to boosted averages of 7.7 points, 1.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.0 three-pointer, it still wasn't enough to make him a valid option in the majority of Fantasy leagues. That's not likely going to change much heading into the 2017-18 season. While D'Angelo Russell was traded to the Nets in the offseason and Jose Calderon departed to join the Cavaliers, the Lakers selected Lonzo Ball with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and also brought in Josh Hart later in the first round, bringing additional young backcourt bodies that will need minutes to develop. With Ball and Jordan Clarkson capable of running the point and clearly ahead of Ennis on the depth chart, Ennis will likely have to battle with Hart for any leftover playing time. That means Ennis isn't expected to see much more run than a season ago, which should limit is overall impact as a Fantasy player.
After playing the first half of his rookie season with the Suns and spending multiple stints in the D-League, Ennis landed in Milwaukee in February as part of the Michael-Carter Williams deal. During his time with the Bucks, Ennis has been unremarkable at best. He finished the year with averages of 3.7 points, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 rebounds and saw just 13 minutes per game, falling into an end-of-the-bench role by season's end. With limited experience coming out of Syracuse, where he only spent one year, the 21-year-old Canadian looked rather overwhelmed . He continues to be a good passer and above-average ball handler, but he still lacks the athleticism and overall explosiveness to make him an impact player at the pro level. As he continues to recover from surgery in May to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder, Ennis merits nary a glance during drafts and has nothing more than very late flyer appeal. That said, this will only be Ennis' second season, so whether he belongs in an NBA rotation remains to be seen.
Ennis is entering his first season in the NBA after a one-and-done college career at Syracuse. In college, the Canadian averaged 12.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.1 steals in 36 minutes per game. He was chosen by the Suns with the 18th-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and will likely slot in as a bench player in his first season with the club. Though Ennis is talented, he lands in a complicated situation in Phoenix, which has a logjam in the backcourt. Eric Bledsoe, Isaiah Thomas, and Goran Dragic are each starting-caliber players and figure to absorb nearly all of the minutes at the guard positions. The likely scenario is that Ennis plays spot minutes for the Suns as they chase a playoff spot, with his role set to grow in the coming seasons. Ennis carries most of his value in dynasty and keeper formats, as he projects to have a better shot at an impact role in the 2015-16 season. In deeper formats, he could be taken as a late-round flier but more likely should simply be monitored as the season progresses.
