2025 Projections
Takes fifth straight loss
Gallardo (8-8) pitched 4.1 innings and took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three in the loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
The 2018 season couldn't have ended soon enough for Gallardo, who registered an abysmal 6.39 ERA and 58:47 K:BB across 94.1 innings this year. The 32-year-old ended the year on a five-start losing streak, allowing 19 runs in 21 innings during that span. Looking to 2019, Gallardo's best chance of securing a regular 25-man roster spot will likely be in a relief role.

Despite having already pitched in 12 major-league seasons, Gallardo is still just entering his age-33 campaign. His last truly interesting year was 2012 (16 wins, 3.66 ERA, 9.0 K/9). Since then, he hasn't topped 7.2 K/9. In his past three seasons, he hasn't bested a 6.5 K/9, 4.1 BB/9 or a 5.42 ERA, and in 2018, his swinging-strike rate bottomed out at a mere 5.8%. While he uses five pitches frequently, none of them are particularly effective. Perhaps a team will use him to chew up innings, as the Reds and Rangers did in 2018. Maybe some pitching coach will discover the tweak that'll return him to prior glory -- or simply give him better results. We'll go out on a limb and bet against that happening. Gallardo's profile carries few promising signs, and with over 1,800 innings on his right arm, he might be squeezing out the final drops of his career.
