Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Tarnok was one of the top prospects acquired by Oakland in the three-way deal that shipped Sean Murphy to Atlanta, but the right-hander dealt with injuries throughout the 2023 campaign and he was shut down in August after undergoing season-ending hip surgery; a surgery that will see the right-hander slowed to begin the 2024 season, as well. When healthy, the 25-year-old right-hander has three pitches that have shown the potential to miss bats in his fastball, slider and change, but he doesn't always have great command of those offerings, and consistency has been an issue since he was drafted by Atlanta back in 2017. There's potential for long-term success for Tarnok, but he should be firmly off radars to begin 2024, even if he's able to earn a spot in the Oakland rotation in the early portion of the year. ANALYSIS
Tarnok has been removed from the 40-man roster but will stick around in the organization for now. The righty was a waiver claim of the Phillies back in July.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Tarnok has two very impressive pitches in his mid-90s four-seamer with excellent characteristics and a hammer curveball. His changeup, slider and command lag behind, but an offseason trade to Oakland should buy Tarnok more developmental time as a starter. He has excellent size (6-foot-3, roughly 200 pounds) and can look dominant when everything is working, but consistency has been lacking at times. Tarnok, who had a 3.05 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 80:22 K:BB in his final 65 innings (14 starts) in the minors last season, has as much strikeout upside as any Athletics starting pitcher. However, he will still need to win a rotation spot this spring, as he is less of a finished product than some of Oakland's other unproven arms. He has two minor-league options remaining and should approach 150 innings this year with good health.
