2025 Fantasy Outlook
Injuries have limited Celesten to 32 official games - all in 2024 in the Arizona Complex League - since he signed with Seattle as the top teenage international prospect on Jan. 15, 2023. The other top prospect from that class, Sebastian Walcott of the Rangers, hasn't had his career affected by injuries and just wrapped up a full year at High-A, which illustrates how much developmental time Celesten has missed. It was a serious hamstring strain that cost him the 2023 season and last year he had surgery on a broken hamate in early-August after suffering the injury late in the ACL season. Prior to the injury, Celesten slashed .352/.431/.568 with three home runs, five steals, a .432 BABIP, a 12.5 percent walk rate and a 19.4 percent strikeout rate. A premium athlete with a chance to stick at shortstop, Celesten showed when healthy that he still has a very high ceiling. This will be a big year for the 19-year-old switch hitter, as he'll be making his full-season debut while also attempting to hold up over a full baseball season for the first time. He has a wide range of outcomes from a dynasty value standpoint, as he isn't young enough to maintain his value amid struggles against Single-A pitching, but is talented enough to potentially climb to High-A, or even Double-A during the year. Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
A Grade 2 hamstring strain suffered in June prevented Celesten from making his official pro debut in 2023, although he recovered in time to play in the fall instructional league. Known for his loud tools and athleticism, Celesten was arguably the top overall player to sign in the 2023 Jan. 15 international signing class, garnering a $4.7 million bonus out of the Dominican Republic. Given the missed time, we won't have any clarity on the quality of his hit tool until he plays in the Arizona Complex League this summer as an 18-year-old. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound shortstop has plus speed and projects for plus raw power, with his hit tool lagging behind. He should be able to stick at shortstop, so if he hits, he'll quickly establish himself as one of the more exciting teenage prospects in the game, but it's possible he will strike out enough to be droppable in some formats.
Padres catcher Ethan Salas is seen as the top real-life prospect in this year's J-15 international signing class, due to the safety of his hit tool and his catcher defense, but Celesten is the most appealing fantasy prospect in the class. The 17-year-old Dominican shortstop has plus speed and plus raw power, and scouts believe the switch hitter can stick at the six. The big question will be whether Celesten hits enough for any of that to matter, so he is a pure lottery ticket in dynasty first-year player drafts. He commanded a $4.7 million signing bonus.
