ANALYSIS
It wasn't long ago that Guerrero was viewed as the next highly touted Cuban import set to make a splash in the MLB, but due to the Dodgers' existing infield depth along with his defensive shortcomings, lack of plate discipline and health woes, the 30-year-old never seemed to find anything more than fleeting success in his three years in the organization. He spent the entire 2016 campaign in the minors before getting released by the Dodgers last June, and didn't latch on anywhere thereafter. While Guerrero's natural power should allow him to thrive against lower-caliber pitching in Japan, considering his advancing age and previously failures in the MLB, it looks unlikely that he'll resurface in the big leagues again.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2015
2014
Guerrero continued to be a bit of an enigma in 2015. After seeing his slash line rise to .370/.407/.815 on May 13, Guerrero began to finally get regular playing time between second base, third base, and the outfield. Unfortunately, that's when things quickly went south as pitchers started to take advantage of his aggressive tendencies and not give him fastballs down the middle. Due to his dwindling production and a lack of an obvious defensive fit, Guerrero seemed to find himself in former manager Don Mattingly's doghouse and he ended up finishing batting just .233/.261/.434 on the season. The .201 ISO indicates that he has real power, but Guerrero also walked in just three percent of his plate appearances and he's below average defensively wherever he plays. If he stays with the Dodgers then he'll again fill a utility role, but look for the club to explore a way to ship him elsewhere.
Guerrero was on the roster for the team's Opening Series in Australia, but was optioned to Triple-A when Dee Gordon was tasked with handling the keystone for the Dodgers. The time at Triple-A was supposed to give Guerrero a chance to become a better defender at second base, but Gordon's production at the position changed those plans. The Dodgers moved Guerrero back to shortstop in mid-May, but he missed significant time when teammate Miguel Olivo bit off a part of his ear during a dugout altercation. Surgery to repair the ear cost Guerrero two months of the season, and he was passed over in favor of Darwin Barney when Hanley Ramirez hit the DL with an oblique injury in August. Guerrero proved capable of hitting Triple-A pitching at a good clip, swatting 15 homers in just 243 at-bats. Where he will fit into the Dodgers' 2015 plans is still up in the air, but the large financial investment in him and his production in the Pacific Coast League should be enough for him to receive a long look in the big leagues this season.
Guerrero joins fellow Cuban Yasiel Puig in Los Angeles after signing a four-year, $28 million deal over the winter. He batted .290/.402/.576 in his last season in Cuba and it looks as if he'll be asked to replace Mark Ellis as the team's starting second baseman. As to when he arrives in the big leagues, that's the big unknown right now. The Dodgers surely regret letting Puig rot for two months in the minors, so should Guerrero have an impressive spring, it's easy to see him being the Opening Day second baseman.
