Closer Watch
Cubs – The Cubs finalized some interesting bullpen acquisitions Tuesday in adding Kevin Gregg to the active roster and claiming Kameron Loe on waivers. While neither pitcher figures to be much of a factor in save situations right away, both pitchers do have experience in the late-innings; Loe with the Brewers as a primary setup man the last few seasons and Gregg as a closer (albeit an embattled one) with the Marlins, Cubs, Blue Jays and Orioles. For now, James Russell and Shawn Camp look like the top options to own in an attempt to mine for saves, but given the constant state of change in the Cubs bullpen, don't be surprised if Loe and Gregg get a look while Kyuji Fujikawa remains on the DL. Even Carlos Marmol could work his way back into some closing work if he continues to impress in middle relief.
Red Sox – The team placed Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day DL on Tuesday with a pulled groin, giving Andrew Bailey some run as the team's closer. While Bailey struggled in the role upon returning from a thumb injury last August, he does have a 2010 A.L. Rookie of the Year award on his ledger and remains a good backup option. If it's apparent Hanrahan isn't pitching like his usual self when he returns from the DL, Bailey could very well hang on to the gig for extended time if he can rediscover his old dominance.

Recommended Pickup
Seth Smith, OF, OAK – The Athletics entered the season with five players to regularly fill the three outfield positions and the DH spot in the lineup, a predicament that often left either Smith or Chris Young on the bench for the first handful of games. With Yoenis Cespedes now on the DL with a thumb injury, both players should be afforded regular playing time, with Smith being a particularly intriguing hitter given the Athletics' opponents over the next few games. Smith has worked almost exclusively in a platoon role during his tenure with the Athletics due to a career .203/.276/.331 mark against left-handers, but has the good fortune of facing right-handed opposing starters for at least the next five games, with the Rays' Jeremy Hellickson representing the most imposing adversary. Smith's triple-slash line shoots up to an impressive .284/.363/.505 against righties, so he figures to be positioned favorably in the Athletics lineup during that stretch of games. As long as he's receiving regular starts against right-handed pitchers, Smith should be a capable short-term pickup in moderate to deep mixed leagues and all AL-only formats, though he's likely owned already in the latter.
