Phelps spent most of his time at Triple-A Columbus before hitting the DL in early July with a wrist injury. His power wasn't totally sapped as is often the case with wrist ailments, but it was certainly a step back for the 26-year-old in his fourth season at Triple-A. He's always had a good eye at the plate and has a little bit of pop, which should serve him well in a bench role. The Orioles acquired him with a waiver claim in November, where he should be positioned to get a long look at second base as the Orioles have a major need at the position. In addition to landing in a more hitter-friendly home park, Phelps now has a very clear path to the big leagues if he proves capable of sustaining a level of production in line with his contributions at Triple-A.
Phelps spent the bulk of his season at Triple-A Columbus and enjoyed a fine season (.278/.368/.454 with 16 homers and nine steals in 134 games) before a September promotion to the Indians. His biggest hurdle is the presence of Jason Kipnis though he did see some time at both shortstop and third base in his brief time with the Indians. He's got a chance for double-digit homers and steals in the right situation and the Indians might consider moving him over to third base to give him a better chance. As it stands now, he'll need an injury to Kipnis or a change of scenery to make much of an impact this season.
Phelps didn't hit much in a couple of brief stints with the Indians, hitting just .155 with a homer in 71 at-bats. He initially hit his way into a promotion with another solid effort at Triple-A Columbus (.294/.376/.492 with 25 doubles and 14 homers in 97 games), but has been passed in the organizational pecking order by Jason Kipnis. To make matters worse, Phelps is blocked at shortstop by Asdrubal Cabrera and at third base by Lonnie Chisenhall. The lack of an opening could make him a good candidate to get dealt, but for now it appears he's ticketed for another season at Triple-A unless the Indians decide to give him a look as their utility infielder.
