Closer Watch
Current Red Sox closer Alfredo Aceves got the save for Boston without too much trouble Monday night against the Twins. Aceves allowed just one hit, a single to Chris Parmelee. This makes Aceves 3-5 in save opportunities since taking over the closer position from the injured Andrew Bailey. In his three saves, Aceves has allowed just one hit while striking out a combined four batters. However, in his two blown saves, he has allowed eight earned runs. His current role as closer is tenuous at best, especially in big market Boston.
Jason Motte blew his first save of the season on Monday for the Cardinals. With a 2-1 St. Louis lead, Motte allowed two runs to score on a Joe Mather single. It's nothing to worry about for now as Motte is in no danger of losing his job, and has pitched very well this year.
Brewers closer John Axford struck out the side in the ninth inning against the Astros on Monday night. This comes three days after allowing a run on three hits and taking the loss against the Rockies. Axford currently has a 6.35 ERA, but he also started last season slow and finished with a 1.95 ERA in 2011.

Recommended Pickup
Devin Mesoraco, C, CIN – Perhaps not quite a player to pick up immediately, but someone you absolutely want to keep an eye on. In fact, you may want to jump early to avoid being beaten to the punch. Mesoraco has gotten off to a good start this season, hitting .304 as the backup catcher to Ryan Hanigan. However, with Hanigan hitting for a meager .543 OPS so far, Mesoraco may be poised to win the starting job sooner than later. Mesoraco is certainly talented, as Baseball America rated him as the 16th best prospect in the nation prior to the 2012 season. And despite not hitting for much power yet, the 24-year-old Mesoraco has shown plenty of pop in the minors, including hitting 26 home runs in 2010. Catcher isn't a strong position, and Mesoraco could potentially be a big help.
Other Recent Recommendations: Jarrod Parker, Jason Hammel, Francisco Cordero and Alex Presley.
