Competing for a bench spot. Mather has a little pop in his bat and can play first base, third base and both corner outfield spots.
The Cardinals rarely gave Mather the playing time that his powerful bat commanded, but it's not like he did much with the opportunities he's had. A .702 OPS in the majors isn't going to cut it from a corner outfielder. The Braves will give him another chance in 2011, but he's already 28 and it looks like he's going to be relegated to the bench on his new team as well.
At one point last March, Mather, an outfielder by trade, looked like he had the third-base job sewn up. He was sent down before the season began and didn't play an inning in the majors last season. A cyst on his wrist (sounds like a Hall and Oates song) led to a couple of surgeries and limited him to just 59 games. He has good power, and the St. Louis outfield is a bit less crowded now, but he's probably just a fifth outfielder at best.
Some saw the 31 minor league homers Mather hit in 2007 and projected a breakout for him in 2008. While he did hit eight home runs in limited action, he also hit just .241 and missed the last month of the season with a wrist injury. He'll likely never be more than a fourth or fifth outfielder for the Cardinals, and it'll be tough to crack the lineup in 2009.
Mather split the season between Double- and Triple-A last year, hitting a combined .271/.357/.522 with 31 homers. He turns 26 this year and although he's on the 40-man roster, he is just organizational depth.
