He has been diagnosed with a sprained ACL and a bone bruise in his left leg, injuries which typically require four weeks for a full recovery. Weeks played in 17 games with the Padres last season, slashing .140/.204/.200 in 57 plate appearances.

The Padres nearly kept Weeks on their Opening Day roster after he impressed during Cactus League play, but he ended up getting the call to San Diego when Cory Spangenberg hit the disabled list in mid-April. Weeks suffered a hamstring strain a few weeks later and never made it back, finishing the abbreviated campaign with a .404 OPS in 17 games with the Padres. Now 30 years old, the interest in his services figures to be tepid at this stage of his career. Moreover, he'll need to prove he's completely healthy to earn a look from another club during spring training, and that opportunity may only happen because of an impressive 10-game stint with El Paso (.306/.405/.500) before his promotion. Weeks elected free agency in October after being outrighted back to Triple-A by the Padres, and he'll compete for a roster spot with the Cubs during spring training after signing a minor league deal with Chicago.
