Closer Watch

Rockies – While Rex Brothers collected his fourth save Sunday and continues to sport a spectacular 0.28 ERA on the season, Rafael Betancourt could be back as soon as Tuesday. It seems likely that Rockies will hand closing duties back to Betancourt, but he could be a trade candidate at the deadline if they lose ground in the NL West race.

Indians – With Chris Perez close to returning, Vinnie Pestano's run as Cleveland's closer is drawing to an end. Pestano hasn't exactly been running away with the job, as he's had a rough go in two of his three save chances, though he's converted them all in the end.

Mariners – Oliver Perez got tasked with the top of the ninth inning in a tie game Sunday, typically the closer's job. He pitched a scoreless inning and the Mariners got him a win in the bottom of the frame. Perez also collected the Mariners' last non-extra-inning save, which came back on June 14. He seems to have a decent hold on the job, such as it is, with Tom Wilhelmsen in the midst of some serious struggles.

Recommended Pickup
Kyle Gibson, SP, MIN – A long-time mainstay on top-prospects lists, Gibson's finally reaching the big leagues at age 25 – practically ancient by today's standards – thanks to his 2011 Tommy John surgery. His first full season after the knife has gone terrifically in Triple-A, as Gibson's posted a 3.01 ERA and 1.14 WHIP for Rochester. The only caveat here is his strikeout rate: He's fanned just 79 in 92.2 innings, good for an unimpressive 7.7 K/9. That said, Gibson's got good command and ace stuff, which makes him worth a pickup in a variety of formats. He'll make his first start Saturday.

Other Recent Recommendations: Roy Oswalt, Jordan Lyles, Koji Uehara, Eric Young Jr., Nick Franklin
