Closer Watch

Orioles - Jim Johnson blew his sixth save of the season Friday against the Yankees, which was also his second blown save in his last four opportunities. Tommy Hunter was the last Orioles other than Johnson to earn a save on June 28, and would appear to be the man to take over if Johnson continues to struggle.

Mariners - Oliver Perez struck out the side Friday night against the Reds to earn his second save of the season. The reason Perez was chosen to appear in the save opportunity rather than Tom Wilhelmsen who has accumulated 17 for Seattle so far this season was because the Reds had three lefties due up. It seems that it will be a closer by committee for now, and the man coming out will depend on the matchup.

Recommended Pickup

Jeremy Hefner, P, NYM - Being available in most formats of fantasy baseball makes Hefner a great option as a spot starter as the last time he gave up more than three runs was May 18. In that amount of time Hefner has lowered his ERA from 5.00 to 3.54 making him not only a good option for a spot start, but a potential permanent spot on your roster. The Mets haven't been that great this year to say the least, and Hefner's three win and six loss record is a sign of that, but there is no reason for any team short on starting pitching shouldn't consider picking him up off the waivers.
