John Makdessi

The Bull

Canada

Gets no help from judges in defeat
LightweightUFC
September 9, 2023
Makdessi lost to Jamie Mullarkey via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC 293 on Saturday in Sydney, Australia.
ANALYSIS
Makdessi looked pretty good for a guy that entered as a +240 underdog. In fact, he probably deserved the decision. "The Bull" started slowly, absorbing far too much damage in the opening frame, but he got progressively better as the fight went along, while Mullarkey slowly faded. A massive strike from Makdessi in Round 2 was by far the most damaging blow either man landed throughout the course of the bout. This is the type of 50-50 result the 38-year-old Canadian could not afford to lose. Makdessi has fought just four times since March 2020, losing three of them.

Will fight Mullarkey
LightweightUFC
July 25, 2023
Makdessi will face Jamie Mullarkey at UFC 293 on September 9, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Now 38 years old, Makdessi last fought back in September of 2022, losing to Nasrat Haqparast via unanimous decision. At this late stage of his career, Makdessi is typically doing one fight per year, and he'll be seeking redemption after dropping two of his last three fights. Defeating Mullarkey will be no easy task, however, as Mullarkey has a lot to prove after his shock defeat to Muhammadjon Naimov back in June of 2023.
Struggles following long layoff
LightweightUFC
September 3, 2022
Makdessi lost to Nasrat Haqparast via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Paris.
ANALYSIS
Makdessi is now 37 years of age and hadn't fought since April of last year, so the fact he appeared rusty a good portion of this fight doesn't come as much of a shock. In what was primarily a kickboxing match, Makdessi struggled with the hand speed of Haqparast. John actually won the total strike battle by a 73-72 count, but there was zero doubt which man landed the more impactful shots throughout the duration of the bout. The Canadian has rarely fought of late, competing exactly once every year since 2017. His record in those six bouts is 4-2, although "The Bull" has dropped two of his last three.
To fight Haqparast in Paris
LightweightUFC
June 18, 2022
Makdessi (hamstring) will face Nasrat Haqparast at the UFC event scheduled for September 3 in Paris, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Makdessi suffered a torn hamstring in the lead-up to his scheduled February bout with Haqparast, which ultimately required surgery and forced him to withdraw from the event. Now that Makdessi has had a few months to recover, it appears the two lightweights will finally face off in Paris in September, as Makdessi looks to earn a second straight victory after defeating Ignacio Bahamondes back in August of 2021.
Pulls out of Hasparast fight
LightweightUFC
January 6, 2022
Makdessi will no longer fight Nasrat Haqparast on the Feb. 19 card after announcing on his personal Twitter account that he will require surgery for a torn hamstring.
ANALYSIS
Makdessi is likely facing a lengthy recovery from the injury and remains without a specific timetable for his return to action. He indicated in the post that the hamstring tore off the bone during training camp, suggesting the tear is a significant one.
Facing Nasrat Haqparast in February
LightweightUFC
November 13, 2021
Makdessi (face) will take on Nasrat Haqparast on Feb. 19, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Makdessi is coming off a split-decision victory over Ignacio Bahamondes, a match which saw him pick up facial fractures, resulting in a six-month medical suspension. That suspension has since ended, so he'll step back into the Octagon to try to pick up a win against a fighter 10 years his junior. Haqparast is coming off a unanimous-decision loss against Dan Hooker in September but had won five out of six fights prior to that setback.
