Pulls upset in Texas
Gooden defeated Wellington Turman via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:11 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Austin, Texas.
ANALYSIS
Gooden was in desperate need of a bounce-back effort following his unanimous decision loss to Carlston Harris this past March, a fight which he missed weight for. He answered the bell here against Turman, an opponent that can't get out of his own way at the moment. Jared spent a good chunk of Round 1 on his back and looked quite lousy prior to the stoppage, but he managed to stagger Turman with a left hook before eventually getting the back of his clearly compromised opponent. The tap came seconds later. While this was a nice win, Gooden is 2-5 in seven fights over the course of two stints with the UFC, so little should be expected moving forward. On the bright side, he'll walk away with a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus -- one of a whopping 10 post-fight bonuses awarded on the evening.
