ANALYSIS
This is the third consecutive fight in which Edgar has been knocked out in devastating fashion. This time the end came when "The Answer" shot in for a takedown that was met with an explosive knee up the middle, which separated the legend from consciousness. Edgar was coherent enough to give a fond farewell to the fans in an interview, in which he remarked how unforgiving MMA can be. While he is correct, he certainly made it work for him, participating in some of the most memorable fights the sport has ever seen and taking the lightweight title from B.J. Penn at UFC 112. He retires from the sport with a record of 23-3-1.

Edgar will take on Chris Gutierrez for a bantamweight bout at UFC 281 on Nov. 12, Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com reports.

The widely heralded veteran known as "The Answer" has lost his past two fights via knockout against Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen in November and February of 2021, respectively. Edgar's retirement bout in Madison Square Garden will feature a difficult opponent in the 31-year-old Gutierrez, who has gone 6-0-1 over his past seven UFC fights, including two knockouts and two unanimous decisions. The younger challenger stands three inches taller than his 39-year-old opponent, though he will surrender a slight one-inch reach advantage.

Father Time is undefeated, and it sure appears as if Edgar is his latest victim. Frankie controlled the first six or seven minutes on the strength of his wrestling, but he appeared to tire as the fight progressed, and Vera was able to methodically overwhelm him on the feet. It also didn't help that Vera appeared to be literally twice Edgar's size. The finish came when Frankie ate a front kick to his jaw that dropped him. He was upset with the immediate stoppage of referee Todd Anderson, but it was clear as day Edgar was done. Frankie turned 40 years of age this past October. He is 2-5 since March 2018, and 1-2 since dropping down to bantamweight about a year and a half ago. Edgar is a sure-fire Hall of Famer, but he may have reached the end of the line. If he and the UFC do agree to run him back out there, they need to be exceedingly careful regarding who they match Edgar up against.

MMA can be a cruel, cruel sport if a fighter doesn't walk away when it's their time, and we are getting dangerously close to that area for "The Answer" (if we aren't there already). Edgar, at age 39, is now 2-5 in his past seven fights dating back to March 2018. Frankie could probably still be reasonably effective if the UFC is careful regarding who they match him up against, but the days of tossing Edgar inside the Octagon against young, up-and-coming studs like Sandhagen came and went years ago. The UFC roster is deeper than ever before. Surely they can, and must, do better. Hopefully Frankie takes his time and regroups and we see him again in a bit more reasonable situation.
