Comeback effort earns contract
Lopes defeated Mikheil Sazhiniani via TKO (punches) at 4:14 of Round 2 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of four winners to earn an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
There were only 18 significant strikes landed between the two fighters in Round 1, and Lopes was on the short end of that count and was even knocked down before ultimately recovering. In the second frame, Lopes took advantage of a clearly tired opponent by finding a huge liver shot that crumbled Sazhiniani. From there, just a few follow-up fists were needed to end the proceedings. Lopes is teetering towards the wrong side of "prospect" status at the age of 31, but the 13-1 Brazilian appears ready to add a quality depth option to a light heavyweight division with room for immediate advancement.
