Almabayev defeated Matheus Nicolau via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
With all due respect to the likes of Jose Johnson, C.J. Vergara, and Ode Osbourne, this was a significant step up in competition for Almabayev, and he handled it well. Neither man did much over the course of the first two rounds, but Asu scored a knockdown early in Round 3 which led to a dominant frame and ensured he would walk out of the Apex with the decision. With the top end of the flyweight division extremely thin, Almabayev is closing in on title-implicating bouts at 125 pounds.

Getting your opposition down is one thing, but Almabayev has consistently displayed the ability to remain a step ahead on the mat. The UFC has been careful regarding the level of competition it has matched Almabayev up against thus far, but that seems likely to change moving forward. He improves to 3-0 with the company.
