Lehtonen has agreed to a contract for next season with Severstal Cherepovets of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Wild acquired Lehtonen in a trade for Anton Khudobin in February and hoped to sign him for 2011-12. They could still convince him to change his mind, but it looks like he'll be playing in Russia. Lehtonen led the Swedish Elite League last season with 33 goals.

Lehtonen, who was traded to Minnesota from Boston last season, is under contract with Severstal Cherepovets of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. He led the Swedish Elite League last season with 33 goals as a member of Skelleftea, but obviously the big forward has no fantasy value away from the NHL.
Lehtonen, who led AHL Providence last season with 50 points in 78 games, has good size (he's 6-4) and skills, but so far his success in the minors hasn't translated into a regular gig with the big club. He has signed a one-year deal with Skelleftea of the Swedish Elite League for 2010-11, but the Bruins will retain Lehtonen's NHL rights.
Lehtonen finished up last season at AHL Providence as the Baby B's top goal-scorer (28) while adding 25 assists in 72 games. He's big and skilled and the Bruins are hoping that he can turn into their next Blake Wheeler. In any case, Lehtonen will have a chance to compete for a spot for the big club next year and even if he doesn't break camp with the team, he'll be on the short list of call-ups.
Lehtonen, who will play his rookie pro season in North America in 2008-09, has decent speed for his big frame, but he's a work in project for the B's.
Lehtonen was returned to his team in Finland in Sept. 2007.
