Sparks was reassigned to AHL Ontario on Wednesday, John Hoven of SiriusXM NHL Network Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Sparks' demotion suggests Cal Petersen may be activated off the NHL's COVID-19 protocols list ahead of Thursday's game versus Vancouver. If that's the case, Sparks is likely in for an extended stay in the minors.

Barring a miracle, the writing is pretty much on the wall for Sparks in Toronto, and perhaps even the NHL. Sparks' game last season could generously be described as queasy. Coach Mike Babcock didn't trust him and that led to the overuse -- and fatigue -- of starter Frederik Andersen. Then, in early April, Sparks was banished from the team to "get his game back." That meant he wasn't a part of the team that faced the Bruins in round one. Sure, Sparks won the AHL Calder Cup two seasons ago, but an 8-9-1 record with a 3.15 GAA and .902 save percentage last year has everyone doubting his game. He'll compete with Michael Hutchinson for the backup role. Do not overinvest.
Sparks has claimed the job as primary backup to Frederik Andersen in Toronto, edging out Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard. Last season, through 43 games with AHL Toronto, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound puck plugger posted a spectacular regular-season record of 31-9-1 to complement a 1.79 GAA and .936 save percentage, plus he led the Marlies to its first-ever championship. Particularly with John Tavares and Auston Matthews directing the No. 1 power play, Sparks should compile plenty of wins whenever Andersen needs a break, and that means he'll be a popular streaming option in DFS play.
Sparks signed a two-year extension with the Leafs in the summer of 2017 after posting a 21-9-0 record, a 2.16 GAA and .922 save percentage in 31 games with the team's AHL affiliate last season. The contract will allow him to continue to hone his skills with the Marlies for two more seasons while Curtis McElhinney backs up at the NHL level. If all goes well, Sparks will be the Leafs’ backup in 2020-21.
Sparks burst onto the Toronto scene with a shutout in his NHL debut, and it was almost inevitable that things went downhill from there. His rise had been meteoric – he'd blown the doors off the AHL after clawing his way up from the ECHL. But Sparks' raw style became a flopping mess in the NHL and he finished 2015-16 as one of the NHL's worst goalies, at least statistically. He's a good kid, but he needs reps in the minors to achieve the growth required to be an NHLer. And it remains to be seen whether the beatdown he took last year will permanently scar his psyche. The Leafs are actively searching for a backup, so don't count on Sparks being the No. 2 man in Hogtown this year. Hey, we're not even sure he'll crack the AHL Toronto Marlies' lineup, either. He could be in the ECHL again. Let's hope he's not a one-hit wonder.
