Monday Daily Puck: Timonen playing like it's 1999

This article is part of our The Daily Puck series.

Prior to the trade deadline, I traded James Neal ($13, whose contract expires at season's end), Daniel Sedin ($37B), Dan Boyle ($17A) and Antti Raanta ($1A) for Cam Fowler ($7A) and Sean Monahan ($3 minors) in the Rotowire Staff league. My team had enough rotisserie points to qualify for the playoffs, but in the head-to-head format I was on the outside looking in.

Neal's a beast. I wouldn't have traded him if he had time left on his contract, but what a trade chip he was.

Sedin has been a huge disappointment but seemed to be on the cusp of a minor turnaround before he got hurt.

I gave my trade partner the option of one of the following three defensemen: Boyle, Alexander Edler ($21A) or Danny DeKeyser ($1A). If I was on the other side of the deal, I might've taken DeKeyser but I can see why he chose Boyle. Defensemen are prized commodities and DeKeyser would help to offset the loss of Fowler and/or possibly serve as an offseason trade piece, but that's looking at things from a non-contender's perspective.

Finally, I included Raanta because the other poolie also owns Chicago starter, Corey Crawford. If anything happens to Crawford, Raanta will earn the wins. Also, the Blackhawks could trade Raanta in the offseason, boosting his value. Having a $1 Raanta is a nice chip.

I didn't ask for any draft picks in the above trade, but ended up moving Brayden Schenn ($3B) for a third-round pick and Edler for a fourth in two separate deals.

All in all, helping trade partners is the way to make deals a "win-win." Options help, too.

Hot:

Kimmo Timonen: The elder defender has scored more than one-quarter of his entire season's points in the last four games. Timonen, who has potted a pair of goals and added five assists in March, has totaled only 26 points (4G, 22A) in 61 contests. He's pointing at the lowest rate since his rookie campaign with Nashville in 1998-99, but it looks like he's revving up his engine in time for one more nice run. Timonen has also registered seven blocked shot over the last two weeks.

Danny DeKeyser: The Detroit rookie has five assists in his last six games. He was on a roll early in 2013-14, but a separated shoulder knocked him off his game. While his power-play time seems to change game-by-game, he's usually in the mix for time on the man advantage.

Antti Niemi: Niemi fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief. Niemi beat the Penguins on Thursday and followed that big game up with a 27-shot shutout Saturday against Montreal. The Sharks used capable backup, Alex Stalock, to push Niemi and it apparently worked. Niemi has been streaky in 2013-14, but he's regained his top spot and is hot once again.

Cold:

Sidney Crosby: It might be one of the few times Crosby ever makes the cold list, but a minus-5 night Thursday warrants the listing. Sir Sidney hasn't been his consistent self lately, turning the puck over with regularity. He has only two goals in his last 12 contests. There's a chance the Olympics took something out of him. Also, the team didn't acquire an elite top-line right winger at the deadline. Crosby remains the best player and the leading scorer in the NHL, but his recent inconsistency shows that nobody is perfect.

Henrik Sedin: The healthy brother has points in three of 17 games since December and hasn't scored a goal since Dec. 14. At this point, fantasy owners have to ask whether Henrik is worth protecting in keeper leagues. He'll be 34 when 2014-15 starts, that's young enough to expect a nice rebound, but hard decisions lie ahead for Sedin owners.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins: He has one point, an even-strength assist, in his last eight games – and that includes more than 20 minutes on the power-play for RNH. Edmonton has more issues than Nugent-Hopkins, but it will be interesting to see if the Oilers trade RNH or any of their other skilled forwards in the offseason.

Recommended Pickup:

Lee Stempniak: He's the latest of a long line of wingers getting a chance to skate on Sidney Crosby's right wing. Stempniak will likely form some kind of platoon there with Brian Gibbons, as coach Dan Bylsma looks to find some chemistry between Crosby and either Gibbons or Stempniak. Beau Bennett is expected back in the next week and a half, so there's no guarantee Stempniak sticks. But in the meantime, he could provide a cheap source of points. He's averaging just over one minute per game on the team's No. 2 power-play unit, also.
